Dietary anti-cancer compound may work by influence on cellular genetics
Researchers have discovered one of the reasons why broccoli may be good for your health. They found that sulforaphane, a dietary compound from broccoli that's known to help prevent prostate cancer, may work through its influence on long, non-coding RNAs. This is another step forward in a compelling new area of study on the underlying genetics of cancer development and progression. (Source: World Pharma News)

The Scientific Reason You’re A Picky Eater
For SELF, by Amy Marturana. We all know a picky eater or two. Maybe you have that one friend who refuses to step foot in a sushi restaurant even though she’s never tried it. Or the one who turns her nose up at the mention of anything green. Maybe you’re the picky eater, avoiding culinary adventures at all costs, because you’re convinced you’ll hate whatever new and gross-looking food is put on your plate. But why is it that some people are picky eaters when others are willing to try pretty much anything that’s edible? (Seriously, people eat bugs these days. The limit does not exist.) Turns ou...

Sulforaphane, a phytochemical in broccoli sprouts, ameliorates obesity
Sulforaphane, a phytochemical contained in broccoli sprouts at relatively high concentrations, has been known to exert effects of cancer prevention by activating a transcription factor, Nrf2 (nuclear factor (erythroid-derived 2)-like 2), which regulates the balance of oxidation - reduction in the cell, and by enhancing anti-oxidation ability of the body and detoxication of chemical compounds taken into the body. Sulforaphane, a phytochemical in broccoli sprouts, ameliorates obesity
(Kanazawa University) Sulforaphane, a phytochemical in broccoli sprouts, is known to exert effects of cancer prevention by detoxicating chemical compounds taken into the body and by enhancing anti-oxidation ability. In the present study, experiments with mice demonstrate that sulforaphane ameliorates obesity, the conclusion based on the two functions of sulforaphane newly uncovered; amelioration of obesity through enhancing energy consumption by browning of adipocytes, and reduction of metabolic endotoxemia through improving gut bacterial flora. Cool-season vegetable rotation effective, sustainable practice
(American Society for Horticultural Science) A 3-year study evaluated two vegetable rotations of cool-season crops with cover crops for their productivity, disease management, and soil building potential. The results showed potential for several crops (onion, lettuce, broccoli, and potato) to be profitable. Results were less successful for strawberry, carrot, green bean, and southernpea. By the end of the study, onion, broccoli, and lettuce showed yield comparable or greater than conventional vegetable yields. (Source: EurekAlert! - Biology)

The Scoop On Finding A Healthy Plant-Based Protein Powder
Conclusion After completing this study, and factoring in the above, of all the plant based proteins I have tried, I would personally choose Nutiva's Plant Protein Superfood 30 Shake in either vanilla or chocolate as my top choice. For me it is obvious since Nutiva is actually certified organic, is at a great affordable price, low in sugars (and not stevia) and has a great taste. Serving suggestion: Add 2 tablespoons of Hempseeds to your shake for an extra 8g of Protein and 1.7g Omega-3.Consider the addition of 1 tablespoon of Nutiva Coconut Manna (ie coconut butter) and water to eliminate the need for buying cartons of al...

Accreditor lays out plan for resident well-being
Dr. Brigham started with Lewin ’s equation:B = f(P,  E). It states that behavior is a function of a person and his or her environment. He then pointed to its implications for physicians and physician well-being. “Think about what we expose our residents to: death and dying, other people’s secrets, other people’s sickness, depression and anxiety. But it’s not all depressing.” Timothy Brigham, MDiv, PhD, chief of staff and senior vice president in the Department of Education at the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), was speaking to representatives from the 32 member schools of the A...

The Paleo Paradox
In conclusion, I asked how he'd reply to people like Zuk and Warinner, who criticize the very premise. His response, in its entirety: "'Nothing in biology makes sense except in the light of evolution'" -- Theodosius Dobzhansky, 1973. A similar statement could be made: Nothing in nutrition makes sense except in the light of evolution." Like so many diet fads, it sounds like common sense. But the science of human evolution and biology is simply more complicated than our common knowledge. It can't be broken down into seven basic principles or delivered in a handy list of "the foods you were meant to eat." Any of these expe...

Beans, Beans, The Magical Food
It was discovered that my eight-year-old daughter is full of poop. Literally, full of poop. At a check-up appointment the doctor discovered that she doesn't empty everything and stool is sitting inside her little body that is causing problems. Shortly after this revelation I too went to the doctor. After x-rays were run, I was told I suffer from "chronic constipation" and was also full of crap. Yep. I only poop about every three to four days. While I can openly talk and write about pooping, I have an issue with actually going number two in front of people. Anxiety sets in if I have to go in public or, heaven forbid, at ...
