Jump on the Gravy Train
It was about 4pm when my mother brought my most delicious Helen meal.  I’ve told her a hundred times I would come get it if she would call when it is ready. Helen fixes my meal for mom before she leaves. Mom insists on bringing it every Friday. Today, Helen cooked cubed-steak and gravy, peas and carrots, steamed broccoli, yellow saffron rice, and Helen’s biscuits. We also had some fruit salad.  You know my father. He has to have a salad with every major meal except breakfast. I was just over at my parent’s house getting some lemonades and there is a ton of food leftover on the stove. It looks like it is g...

So, this whole Angelina Jolie thing. . .
Y'all have heard she had her boobs removed because she carries a mutant BRCA gene, right? And that she's gonna have her ovaries taken out pretty soon, too, right?I cannot *believe* what folk been sayin' about that. First of all, it's nobody's place to have an opinion on what she does with her own body, even if she puts it out there in an op-ed in the New York Times. Second of all, if you have the kind of opinion that says, "She should've considered what that would do to her fans" or "She should've tried yoga and broccoli first," I will take you down.Or, I would've, but then I read this:Oh F. You.Don't want your real name b...

Ask the Nutritionist: Calcium Supplements, Yes, No, WTF?
Got questions about healthy eating and nutrition? Well, today starts a new feature at Cranky Fitness: Ask the Nutritionist! It could also rightfully be called "Ask the Dietitian," since both the contributors are RD's. I almost did call it that, but then decided to play it safe in case either of these two knowledgeable and articulate experts figures out what a silly blog this is and decides to bail.  What if I need to find someone new and have to cast a wider net?  No certification, but pretty darn sensible! Plus, half the time I spell it "Dietitian" and the other half "Dietician" and that was driving me...

6 Steps Toward Resilience & Greater Happiness
The opposite of depression is not happiness, according to Peter Kramer, author of “Against Depression” and “Listening to Prozac,” it is resilience: the ability to cope with life’s frustrations without falling apart. Proper treatment doesn’t suppress emotions or dull a person’s ability to feel things deeply. It builds a protective layer — an emotional resilience — to safeguard a depressive from becoming overwhelmed and disabled by the difficulties of daily life. However, the tools found in happiness research are those I practice in my recovery from depression and anxiety, even though, theoreticall...

Jordan Grumet Interviews Himself, Again
I caught up with Jordan Grumet, physician, Internet entrepreneur, writer, and overall man of mystery in a secluded corner of Panera Bread Company. Q: Jordan, this is the third in a series of self interviews over the last two years for this blog.  Tell me, is anyone else (present company excluded), interested in what your doing? A: Actually, my life story was recently presented to a distinguished group just last week. Q: And how was it received? A: My son's second grade teacher said he did a really stellar job! Q: Um...OK.  You recently were featured in Mike Sevilla's Family Medicine Rock's online radio show....

Food Stamp Fraud and Twinkies
Chris Edwards The federal food stamp program—now called SNAP—is attracting a lot of media coverage. One reason for this is that the program’s costs have exploded—spending more than quadrupled during the Bush-Obama years to $82 billion in 2013 (see here and here p. 16). The Clinton, Bush, and Obama administrations all took steps to loosen the purse strings on food stamp eligibility, and those changes have led to the ballooning costs of recent years during the stagnant economy. Aside from the rising costs, two other aspects of SNAP have garnered interest. One is food stamp fraud. The other is the program’s “Twin...

Healing Leaky Livers
By David Spero It may surprise you to know that, for many people, Type 2 diabetes is primarily a liver disease. The pancreas damage comes later. Is there anything we can do to heal a diabetic liver? Liver issues in diabetes are complicated. An article in the journal Clinical Diabetes explained that diabetes can cause liver disease; liver disease can cause diabetes; or both can arise together from other causes. Whichever comes first, the sick liver may produce way too much glucose, enough to overwhelm the body's insulin. Why would a liver start pumping out unneeded glucose? Unhealthy livers tend to have a lot of fat in the...

How to Eat Real Food Without Spending Hours in the Kitchen
Editor’s Note: This is a guest post from Jules Clancy of Stonesoup. Are you eating real, whole food as much as you’d like? If you’ve been following Zen Habits for any length of time, you’ve probably been inspired by Leo’s story. My favorite part is how he went from being an overweight junk food eater to a lean, plant-food-loving machine. Like Leo, I’m a big believer that for optimum health it’s best to eat real, whole food as much as possible. Preferably prepared at home. The good news is, it doesn’t need to take as much time as you’d think. When I was writing my b...

Will you survive Wheat Belly?
Dietitian Kristi King reviewed Wheat Belly for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND), full text here. Among her comments: ” . . . there is very little guidance as to what are appropriate substitutions during meals, therefore, one who does not review this diet with a registered dietitian could potentially set themselves up for vitamin and mineral deficiencies, such as B vitamins, calcium, and vitamin D just to name a few.” “Review this diet with a registered dietitian”? Is she serious? This is indeed consistent with the agenda that the Academy has been pursuing for many years, trying to make ...

First Sign of Alzheimer's Short Term Memory Loss
I want to make two points here. First, short term memory loss is hard to detect in the early stages of dementia. Second, long term memory, memories of information stored long ago, still resides in the brain. If you try patiently you can still bring this information out, and it is sometimes fascinating. By Bob DeMarco Alzheimer's Reading Room Subscribe to the Alzheimer's Reading Room Email: Dotty 95 years old One of the first signs of dementia is short term memory loss. Alzheimer's is the most common form of dementia. Short term memory loss occurs when neural passages in the brain become...
