Forget the Diet Plans: The No-Brainer Way to Eat Healthy AND Lose Weight
During my life I’ve had a love/hate view of “the meal plan” segment of diet books. I want to make it work, but often it just takes too much time and effort to follow the plan and so I don’t stick with it for more than a couple days. I’ve read many many books and articles on nutrition, food as medicine, and weight loss. In that time I’ve come up with a simple formula that I use to eat healthy and lose/maintain weight. What follows is a simple approach to eating that is both healthy and conducive to losing/maintaining your desired weight. The 5 Pillars of Healthy Eating Remembering...

5 Fun Things to Do with Broccoli
This isn't a diet or recipe blog, in case you haven't noticed. We don't often post specifics on what to eat or not to eat. But let's face it, a huge part of dealing with diabetes every day is FOOD.I am terribly tired of thinking about FOOD -- what... (Source: Diabetes Mine)

Spreading Some Holiday Cheer: Global Warming Not Always 'Worse Than We Thought'
Patrick J. Michaels and Paul C. "Chip" Knappenberger Global Science Report is a feature from the Center for the Study of Science, where we highlight one or two important new items in the scientific literature or the popular media. For broader and more technical perspectives, consult our monthly “Current Wisdom.” We know this: Every holiday season some of our readers make some offhanded comment at a party, to the effect that, well, global warming (or its effects) appear to have been a bit overblown. Before you finish, you’re likely to be assaulted by a sharp ranch dressing-laden carrot stick or you might ge...

More Reasons to Eat Christmas Brussels Sprouts - Fertility
Fertility Clinic BeaulieuNutritionists have long been aware of the potential of an optimum diet to improve fertility and help with healthy successful pregnancies. Statistics gathered by pre conceptual care charity Foresight show healthy childbirth success results that most IVF and fertility clinics can only dream of (up to 4 times more successful in some cases)A new study goes one step further to prove why. Sadly it's an animal study rather than a human study but it exposes the potential mechanisms that inadequate diets provoke. It also highlights how important it is that the potential fathers adopt a healthy optimised die...

Fit Family Challenge 2013: Ten Tips For Fast, Healthy, And Affordable Meals
I’m very excited to be the nutrition coach for the Boys & Girls Clubs’ Fit Family Challenge again this year. In surveying the finalist families, I discovered that the two most important nutrition issues on their minds were cooking speed and food affordability. Far down the list were things like food allergies, weight loss, and nutrition basics. Contrary to popular belief, healthy eating doesn’t have to be expensive. A new study showed that a healthful diet only costs an average of $1.50/day more than an unhealthy diet, and the additional cost is mostly related to the expense of leaner protein sources....

The Dangers of a Soda Tax
Trevor Burrus Discussing the problems with a soda tax is both easy and difficult. It is easy because the main argument is fairly obvious: If taxing soda in the name of public health is a legitimate function of government, then there is no functional limit on what government can do under the guise of public health. But this argument, though straightforward, is a difficult sell because it is not terribly convincing. This is partially because it is a slippery slope argument (“step 1 will inexorably lead to step 10”), and slippery slope arguments are often straw-man arguments. Arguing against step 10 (“so why don’t we...

7 Things a Depressed Parent Can Say to a Child
I’m usually pretty good at hiding my tears from my kids, but lately I’ve been busted a few times because they come so frequently and don’t go away. How do I respond when my grade-schoolers ask me why I’ve been crying? How do I explain this insidious illness to them? Two years ago I wrote a children’s book devoted to these questions. It’s called, What Does Depressed Mean? A Guidebook for Children with a Depressed Loved One. Excerpted from the book, here are seven things that you can say to your child when you’re depressed. Your loved one is sick. You have probably heard someone say that your loved one is ...

Dr. Perlmutter and Grain Brain on Dr. Oz
As many of you know, yesterday I had the opportunity to spend some time with my good friend Dr. Oz discussing my new book, Grain Brain, and the role of diet in determining brain health. For starters, welcome to all who are joining me for the first time. I hope you’ll take some time to read Grain Brain and participate in the dialogue that takes place on my website and on my Facebook page. While there were many interesting and important ideas we could have discussed, we focused on the primary and detrimental role of dietary choices favoring carbohydrates as actually proving toxic to brain health. Dr. Oz and I mentioned h...

alimentary, my dear Watson
When Cal was little I freely admit that we rarely cooked and ordered out a lot due to a confluence of factors: residency, tiny apartment kitchen, ridiculous availability of cheap multi-ethnic restaurant delivery options being the primary ones. When Mack was a toddler I cooked a little bit more, but again, freely admit that I relied very heavily on the Trader Joe's ready-made-meal aisle for, well, 75% of our dinners, though supplemented with fresh fruit and vegetables to round out the microwaved, peel-back-the-plastic-wrap experience. Now, with Nina eating table food and me being somewhat more firmly entrenched in the trappi...

Robots Improve Food And Wine Quality
A robotic grape sorter will improve wine quality and pay for itself in 2 years. Fast image processing makes this possible. Automation raises quality. As computer hardware speeds up and algorithms for image processing improve many agricultural jobs now done by manual laborers will be done better and more cheaply by robots. I even foresee the day when weed and bug removal is done by machine that choose each weed and each bug to remove. Another story on better food quality thru robotic agricultural work: Dutch field robot harvests only right-sized broccoli. In this sotry image processing is again key to higher quality. Anothe...

Medical Mispronunciations and Misspelled Words: The Definitive List.
Hearing medical mispronunciations and seeing misspelled words are an under appreciated  joy of working in healthcare.  Physicians often forget just how alien the language of medicine is to people who don't live it everyday.  The best part about being a physician is not helping people recover from critical illness. The best part is not  about  listening and understanding with compassion and empathy.  Nope, the best part about being a physician is hearing patients and other healthcare providers butcher the language of medicine and experiencing great entertainment in the process.   Doctors c...

Helen Fridays!
Baked Chicken was the name of the game today.  We also had broccoli, green beans, sweet potato patties, and cornbread.  Not pictured is a green salad.  You may know my father has to have a salad of any kind with his evening meal. (Source: The 4th Avenue Blues)

Probiotics
My child has lots of food allergies, is it safe to give them probiotics? Are probiotics safe for kids with food allergies? Absolutely! In fact, I especially recommend probiotics for children with allergies because some studies have shown that probiotics can lessen the immune reaction against proteins in foods. While there’s no guarantee that probiotics will help (not all studies have demonstrated positive results), no serious adverse effects have been reported. Probiotics are very safe. But, as you are probably learning from dealing with allergies to milk, eggs, nuts, and shellfish, it’s important to at least check...
