EMTALA Question
If you have a service available at your hospital and they refuse to consult on a patient and recommend transfer to another facility is this an EMTALA violation? For example you are at a community hospital and you have an MVA patient with an isolated injury (say hip fracture or minor SAH) without any need for a trauma surgery. Can ortho or neurosurgery refuse the patient based on mechanism when they are credentialed for the appropriate procedure and management does not change based on... Assessment and intervention hours needed for a neuro track internship
I will be applying to internships in a couple of years, and I am wondering how many hours of both intervention and neuropsychological assessment I need to be competitive for a reputable neuro track AMC or VA. My practicum experiences offer little to no intervention hours because they are full neuro. I am worried I will not be considered without a decent amount of intervention hours given a good chunk of internship is intervention based. Can any training directors or matched students speak... Therapy practicum question
Hello all - I am a faculty member at an academic medical center that accepts 3rd year clinical psychology doctoral students for practicum. Currently, these students are participating in psychological and neuropsychological evaluations under my direct supervision. Since they are unlicensed, they are not practicing independently in patient care. Rather, I sit next to them while they administer tests I trained them on or I watch a livestream of their work towards the end of the practicum year... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Medical schools with different/flexible curriculum
Can those of you who know of med schools with more customizable curriculums respond with the name(s) of the schools. I'm a pre-med (MD PhD) student looking to do research to create more effective and holistic mental health treatment, and hopefully eventually start my own company to proliferate these treatments. I am more interested in the neuroscience research/pharmaceutical/business side, yet I am certain that I need an MD to have the depth of knowledge and sway I need to make progress... Neuropsychiatry
I'm a current M2 at a DO school who is interested interested in Psych and Neuro. I have a great deal of experience in both and recognize the differences between the two, but have enjoyed both the subject matter and what I've seen in shadowing. I recognize I will likely figure out which one I'll be going into next year - but I was wondering if there was any way to scratch my interests in both fields? I understand that Movement and Epilepsy both see a good deal of psychiatric comorbidities -... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Would this count towards my BCPM gpa for AMCAS/TMDSAS?
I am a Neuroscience major and am planning on taking a course that falls under the Neuroscience department. However my main concern is that although the course that I am taking is classified as "NSC", the course description is more on the humanities side. I'm more confident that this course would apply towards my science gpa for TMDSAS but am still unsure about AMCAS. NSC 4381 Health Disparities in Neuroscience - Real and/or perceived differences in race/ethnic origin, sex/gender/sexual... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Lab Course that doesn't have "lab" written anywhere in its name or description
Hi everyone, A bit of a neurotic question but oh well: Will it be an issue if the biology lab course (lab only) I'm using as a prerequisite doesn't have the word "lab" listed anywhere on the official transcript or description? The class in question is called "Recombinant DNA Techniques". Its description on the biology department website is written as such: "Theory and practice of recombinant DNA and molecular biology techniques. Includes CRISPR-Cas9 editing, DNA sequencing, PCR, and... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Wet or Dry Lab Research?
Hello! I’m currently in the 2024 application cycle and wanted to do a research while waiting for interview dates and in case for reapplying. I have an opportunity to either work in a dry lab or a wet lab. For the dry lab, I would be completely using coding like python for biomedical dataset analysis. I started learning coding a few months ago and thought the research was interesting as it analyzes datasets of cancer and other diseases of real patients. The wet lab is a neurophotonics lab... Part-time Tele work?
Hello, I'm a current resident and will be applying for a pain fellowship. I want to practice neuro part time and was wondering how many shift requirements would be considered for a part time position? My ideally work week would be 4 days of pain a week and 1-2 tele neuro shifts (so maybe 6 shifts total?). Would tele companies let me work at this low number of shifts? What would compensation look like? Will it be $/hr or $/consult? How many hours (eg can I choose between 4 hour or 8)? Can I... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

What should students be thinking about when considering applying neuro?
I'm a US-MD student who just finished their neuro rotation (and a neuro + path research year) I really liked it, but it is competing with my interest in pathology. Both have been my interests since day 1 of med school. I love neuro for the flexibility. Being able to work anywhere and everywhere. ICU, outpatient, inpatient, rehab, telehealth. Wide range of fellowships. Ability for good lifestyle post-residency. It has the most interesting cases in medicine by a mile. Feels very... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

What should students be thinking about when considering applying path?
I'm a US-MD student who just finished their neuro rotation (and a neuro + path research year) I really liked it, but it is competing with my interest in pathology. Both have been my interests since day 0 of med school. When it comes to passion, I think I love the workflow of path more. I like the bench, driving the scope, frozens, leadership opportunities/lab admin, the little details. The kicker is the lack of flexibility kind of kills me. Less employable outside of large hospitals and... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)
