Public misconceptions and attitudes towards persons diagnosed with epilepsy in the Kingdom of Bahrain: A cross-sectional study
CONCLUSION: The studied sample of the Bahraini public demonstrated a satisfactory level of knowledge about epilepsy. However, they still held certain misconceptions that could impact their attitudes towards PdwE. Community awareness campaigns can address this knowledge gap and reduce epilepsy stigma.PMID:38452516 | DOI:10.1016/j.yebeh.2024.109731 (Source: Epilepsy and Behaviour)

Assessment of drug utilization and potentially inappropriate medications in hemodialysis patients with end-stage renal dysfunction: A study in a tertiary care hospital in Bahrain
CONCLUSION: A huge burden of drug therapy was observed in the hemodialysis patients in terms of higher proportions of PIM, complex medical regimen, and prescription of drugs with risk of TdP. Implementation of clinical decision support tools enhancing rational prescription and identification of drugs with TdP risk, introducing antimicrobial stewardship, and stepwise deprescription of the drugs with the least benefit-risk ratio are warranted.PMID:38393922 | DOI:10.3233/JRS-230004 (Source: International Journal of Risk and Safety in Medicine)

A systematic review of school-based weight-related interventions in the Gulf Cooperation Council countries
ConclusionsThis review suggests the potential effectiveness of school-based interventions in the GCC countries. However, a thorough evaluation of these studies revealed significant methodological limitations that must be acknowledged in interpreting these results. Future studies in this field should be theory-based and use more rigorous evaluation methods.Systematic review registrationPROSPERO registration number: CRD42020156535. (Source: Systematic Reviews)

Oil pollution threatens Persian Gulf marine life | Science
The Persian Gulf is a shallow sea located between Iran, Iraq, Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, and Yemen. These nine countries possess 50% of the world's oil reserves (1) and produce about 25% of the oil consumed globally (2). The extensive oil and industrial activities, including numerous oil spills between 1980 and 2020 (1, 2), have led to substantial pollution and severely damaged marine life in the Persian Gulf (3). Given that preserving the quality of the marine environment is essential to the social fabric of life and to the economic success in the region (2), governments must pri...

Favipiravir for treating COVID-19
CONCLUSIONS: The low- to very low-certainty evidence means that we do not know whether favipiravir is efficacious in people with COVID-19 illness, irrespective of severity or admission status. Treatment with favipiravir may result in an overall increase in the incidence of adverse events but may not result in serious adverse events.PMID:38314855 | PMC:PMC10840071 | DOI:10.1002/14651858.CD015219.pub2 (Source: Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews)

Descriptive analysis to assess seasonal patterns of COVID-19 and influenza in low-income and middle-income countries in Asia, the Middle East and Latin America
Conclusions These results can inform public health strategies. The lack of observed seasonal behaviour highlights the importance of maintaining year-round vaccination rather than implementing seasonal campaigns. Further research investigating the influence of climate conditions, social behaviour and year-round preventive measures could be fundamental for shaping appropriate policies related to COVID-19 and respiratory viral disease control in low-income and middle-income countries as COVID-19 variant data and epidemiologic patterns accrue over time. Prospective Cohort Study of Incidence and Risk Factors for Catheter-associated Urinary Tract Infections in 212 Intensive Care Units of Nine Middle Eastern Countries
CONCLUSIONS: The following CAUTI RFs are unlikely to change: age, sex, ICU type, and country income level. Based on these findings, it is suggested to focus on reducing LOS, UC/DU ratio, and implementing evidence-based CAUTI prevention recommendations.PMID:38283207 | PMC:PMC10822129 | DOI:10.5001/omj.2023.121 (Source: Oman Medical Journal)
