Endokrynol Pol. 2024 Apr 22. doi: 10.5603/ep.99519. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTType 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) has become a major public health concern, causing significant disability and death worldwide. Fuelled by a modern sedentary lifestyle and poor dietary practices, T2DM affects at least 10.5% of the world's population. This paper seeks to review the progress made by the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries (Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates) in addressing T2DM, focusing on glycaemic control proportions and comparing it with the 2015 review. The results indicate no signif...

Beyond pulmonary embolism: Alternative diagnosis and incidental findings on CT pulmonary angiography in sickle cell disease
ConclusionThis study underscores the limited additional diagnostic yield of CTPA for identifying alternative diagnoses to PE in SCD patients, with the majority of diagnoses, such as pneumonia, already suggested by chest radiographs. The frequent incidental findings, most of which necessitate further evaluation, highlight the need for a cautious and tailored approach to using CTPA in the SCD population. Verification of 2021 IDF-DAR risk assessment tool for fasting Ramadan in patients with diabetes attending primary health care in The Kingdom of Bahrain: The DAR-BAH study
There is a high prevalence of diabetes mellitus among Muslim adult patients. Those Muslims are required to fast the holy month of Ramadan. However, the Islam religion exempted some people with medical issues. It was not clear if all the patients with diabetes were considered medically unfit to fast Ramadan. Therefore, IDF-DAR group created a new risk calculator to categorize the patients with diabetes to advise with or against fasting accordingly. (Source: Diabetes Research and Clinical Practice)

Correlations between serum kidney injury molecule-1, cystatin C and immunosuppressants: A cross-sectional study of renal transplant patients in Bahrain
J Biomed Res. 2024 Mar 26:1-9. doi: 10.7555/JBR.37.20220211. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTRenal transplant patients receive several immunosuppressive drug regimens that are potentially nephrotoxic for treatment. Serum creatinine is the standard for monitoring kidney function; however, cystatin C (Cys C) and kidney injury molecule-1 (KIM-1) have been found to indicate kidney injury earlier than serum creatinine and provide a better reflection of kidney function. Here, we assessed Cys C and KIM-1 serum levels in renal transplant patients receiving mycophenolate mofetil, tacrolimus, sirolimus, everolimus, or cyclosporine to ...

Risky business: medical students' feedback-seeking behaviours: a mixed methods study
Med Educ Online. 2024 Dec 31;29(1):2330259. doi: 10.1080/10872981.2024.2330259. Epub 2024 Mar 26.ABSTRACTThere are differing views on how learners' feedback-seeking behaviours (FSB) develop during training. With globalisation has come medical student migration and programme internationalisation. Western-derived educational practices may prove challenging for diverse learner populations. Exploring undergraduate activity using a model of FSB may give insight into how FSB evolves and the influence of situational factors, such as nationality and site of study. Our findings seek to inform medical school processes that support f...

A Novel PTRH2 Gene Mutation Causing Infantile-onset Multisystem Neurologic, Endocrine, and Pancreatic Disease in a Bahraini Patient
Oman Med J. 2024 Jan 31;39(1):e599. doi: 10.5001/omj.2024.08. eCollection 2024 Jan.ABSTRACTInfantile-onset multisystem neurologic, endocrine, and pancreatic disease (IMNEPD) is a rare autosomal recessive multisystemic disease with a prevalence of < 1/1 000 000. The wide spectrum of symptoms and associated diseases makes the diagnosis of this disease particularly challenging. Here, we report a 12-year-old Bahraini male who presented with the core clinical features of IMNEPD including intellectual disability, global developmental delay, sensorineural hearing loss, endocrine dysfunction, and exocrine pancreatic insufficien...
