Correlations between serum kidney injury molecule-1, cystatin C and immunosuppressants: A cross-sectional study of renal transplant patients in Bahrain
J Biomed Res. 2024 Mar 26:1-9. doi: 10.7555/JBR.37.20220211. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTRenal transplant patients receive several immunosuppressive drug regimens that are potentially nephrotoxic for treatment. Serum creatinine is the standard for monitoring kidney function; however, cystatin C (Cys C) and kidney injury molecule-1 (KIM-1) have been found to indicate kidney injury earlier than serum creatinine and provide a better reflection of kidney function. Here, we assessed Cys C and KIM-1 serum levels in renal transplant patients receiving mycophenolate mofetil, tacrolimus, sirolimus, everolimus, or cyclosporine to ...

Risky business: medical students' feedback-seeking behaviours: a mixed methods study
Med Educ Online. 2024 Dec 31;29(1):2330259. doi: 10.1080/10872981.2024.2330259. Epub 2024 Mar 26.ABSTRACTThere are differing views on how learners' feedback-seeking behaviours (FSB) develop during training. With globalisation has come medical student migration and programme internationalisation. Western-derived educational practices may prove challenging for diverse learner populations. Exploring undergraduate activity using a model of FSB may give insight into how FSB evolves and the influence of situational factors, such as nationality and site of study. Our findings seek to inform medical school processes that support f...

A Novel PTRH2 Gene Mutation Causing Infantile-onset Multisystem Neurologic, Endocrine, and Pancreatic Disease in a Bahraini Patient
Oman Med J. 2024 Jan 31;39(1):e599. doi: 10.5001/omj.2024.08. eCollection 2024 Jan.ABSTRACTInfantile-onset multisystem neurologic, endocrine, and pancreatic disease (IMNEPD) is a rare autosomal recessive multisystemic disease with a prevalence of < 1/1 000 000. The wide spectrum of symptoms and associated diseases makes the diagnosis of this disease particularly challenging. Here, we report a 12-year-old Bahraini male who presented with the core clinical features of IMNEPD including intellectual disability, global developmental delay, sensorineural hearing loss, endocrine dysfunction, and exocrine pancreatic insufficien...

Stage at diagnosis of colorectal cancer in the Middle East and Northern Africa: A population-based cancer registry study
Int J Cancer. 2024 Mar 8. doi: 10.1002/ijc.34895. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTColorectal cancer (CRC) is the 2nd most common cancer and 3rd most common cause of death in the Middle East and Northern Africa (MENA) region. We aimed to explore CRC stage at diagnosis data from population-based cancer registries in MENA countries. In 2021, we launched a Global Initiative for Cancer Registry Development (GICR) survey on staging practices and breast and CRC stage distributions in MENA. According to the survey results, population-based data on TNM stage for CRC were available from six registries in five countries (Kuwait, Morocc...

Public misconceptions and attitudes towards persons diagnosed with epilepsy in the Kingdom of Bahrain: A cross-sectional study
CONCLUSION: The studied sample of the Bahraini public demonstrated a satisfactory level of knowledge about epilepsy. However, they still held certain misconceptions that could impact their attitudes towards PdwE. Community awareness campaigns can address this knowledge gap and reduce epilepsy stigma.PMID:38452516 | DOI:10.1016/j.yebeh.2024.109731 (Source: Epilepsy and Behaviour)
