Oil pollution threatens Persian Gulf marine life | Science
The Persian Gulf is a shallow sea located between Iran, Iraq, Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, and Yemen. These nine countries possess 50% of the world's oil reserves (1) and produce about 25% of the oil consumed globally (2). The extensive oil and industrial activities, including numerous oil spills between 1980 and 2020 (1, 2), have led to substantial pollution and severely damaged marine life in the Persian Gulf (3). Given that preserving the quality of the marine environment is essential to the social fabric of life and to the economic success in the region (2), governments must prioritize environmental protection and provide support to environmental organizations in the region.
