Fluence sees continued expansion of applications for its modular desalination system
Publication date: December 2018Source: Membrane Technology, Volume 2018, Issue 12Author(s): Simon AtkinsonUS-based provider of water and wastewater treatment systems Fluence Corp Ltd is seeing continued expansion of applications worldwide for its modular desalination system NIROBOX™, further increasing the company's recurring revenues. Earlier this year we reported on various deployments of the plant, including in the Philippines and Argentina, and on the island of Mayotte, located off the east coast of Africa, between Madagascar and Mozambique. Here we look at further contracts covering a build, own and operate plant in...

A clinically structured and partnered approach to genetic testing in Trinidadian women with breast cancer and their families
ConclusionsIn Trinidad and Tobago, a clinically structured and partnered approach to our testing program led to a significant rate of proband response by completing the intervention counseling session, executing risk-reducing procedures as well as informing and motivating at-risk relatives, thereby demonstrating the utility and efficacy of this BC control program. Quantum changes in self-efficacy and condom-use intention among youth: A chained cusp catastrophe model
ConclusionOur findings support the central role of self-efficacy and peer influence as two chains in bridging the complex quantum relationships between HIV knowledge/condom-use skills and condom-use intention among adolescents. The nonlinear cusp catastrophe modeling provided a new method to advance HIV behavioral research. (Source: Journal of Adolescence)

Identifying Areas at Greatest Risk for Recent Zika Virus Importation — New York City, 2016
In this study, we used logistic regression15 to predict weekly nowcasts16 throughout the summer of 2016 of census tracts at greatest risk of recent ZIKV importation. Nowcast results were used to inform geographically targeted activities, including performing public education, enrolling additional healthcare facilities in a sentinel surveillance system for detecting local ZIKV transmission, interpreting syndromic surveillance signals suggesting possible ZIKV-like illness, and, when reviewed in conjunction with mosquito surveillance data, informing control of Aedes spp. mosquitoes and placement of traps for continued surveil...

Natural hybridization between divergent lineages in a selfing hermaphroditic fish.
Abstract By definition, mating between individuals is infrequent in highly selfing organisms, and so too, therefore, hybridization should be rare between genetically divergent lineages in predominantly self-fertilizing species. Notwithstanding these expectations, here we report a remarkable case of natural hybridization between highly diverged phylogeographic lineages of the mangrove rivulus, a small killifish that reproduces predominantly by self-fertilization and typically is found as highly homozygous lines in most parts of its extensive geographical range. Two distinctive genetic lineages (Kryptolebias...

Speaking With Your Hands —The History of the Manicure
Fingernails. These plates of alpha-keratin punctuating our fingertips represent an ideal canvas for expression, one that is eminently visible to others and ourselves. The figures support this observation; nail salon revenue in the United States has been estimated at more than $8 billion a year, a figure akin to the gross domestic product of a small nation (and is actually comparable with that of the Bahamas). This figure also sheds light on the importance of properly manicured nails in modern society. (Source: JAMA Dermatology)

Description of Sansalvadorimonas verongulae gen. nov., sp. nov., a gammaproteobacterium isolated from the marine sponge Verongula gigantea.
Abstract A Gram-stain-negative, strictly aerobic, motile, rod-shaped bacterium, designated strain RKSG058T, was isolated from the marine sponge Verongula gigantea, collected off the west coast of San Salvador, The Bahamas. Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that RKSG058T formed a distinct lineage within the family Hahellaceae (order Oceanospirillales, class Gammaproteobacteria), and was most closely related to the genus Endozoicomonas, with sequence similarities to members of this genus ranging from 92.0 to 93.7 %. Optimal growth occurred at 30 °C, at pH 7 and in the prese...

Delayed Diagnosis of HIV among Non-Latino Black Caribbean Immigrants in Florida 2000-2014.
Abstract Prompt HIV diagnosis decreases the risk of HIV transmission and improves health outcomes. The study objective was to examine rates of delayed HIV diagnosis among non-Latino Black Caribbean immigrants in Florida. The sample included 39,008 Black HIV-positive individuals, aged 13 or older from the Caribbean and the mainland U.S. Delayed HIV diagnosis was defined as AIDS diagnosis within three months of HIV diagnosis. After adjusting for demographic factors, year of HIV diagnosis, transmission mode, neighborhood level socioeconomic status, and rural-urban residence, a disparity persisted for Caribbea...

Keeping amphioxus in the laboratory: an update on available husbandry methods.
Authors: Carvalho JE, Lahaye F, Schubert M Abstract Cephalochordates, commonly known as amphioxus or lancelets, are small, marine animals that can be found in coastal habitats of temperate, subtropical, and tropical waters. Together with vertebrates and tunicates, the cephalochordates belong to the chordate phylum, whose members are characterized by a number of conserved morphological features, such as a dorsal nerve cord, a notochord, a pharynx, a segmented musculature as well as a post-anal tail. Due to their basal position within the phylum, cephalochordates have become essential models for studying the...

UF and RO technologies produce drinking water in the USA and Bahamas
Publication date: September 2017 Source:Membrane Technology, Volume 2017, Issue 9 Author(s): Simon Atkinson Two different applications of membrane technology – both developed by General Electric Co – are being used to produce drinking water in the USA and the Bahamas. This news focus briefly describes how ultrafiltration (UF) membranes are being used to upgrade a treatment plant in Florida to improve water quality, and reverse osmosis (RO) desalination is being applied on the Caribbean island of Eleuthera to help solve its water challenges.
