The Impact of Teachers’ Modifications of an Evidenced-Based HIV Prevention Intervention on Program Outcomes
Abstract The degree to which evidence-based program outcomes are affected by modifications is a significant concern in the implementation of interventions. The ongoing national implementation of an evidence-based HIV prevention program targeting grade 6 students in The Bahamas [Focus on Youth in The Caribbean (FOYC)] offers an opportunity to explore factors associated with teachers’ modification of FOYC lessons and to examine the impact of types and degrees of modifications on student outcomes. Data were collected in 2012 from 155 teachers and 3646 students in 77 government elementary schools. Results i...

Interpopulation Variation in a Condition-Dependent Signal: Predation Regime Affects Signal Intensity and Reliability.
In this study, we assess the effect of a variable signal cost, predation, on signal intensity and reliability among 16 populations of Bahamas mosquitofish (Gambusia hubbsi) that use colorful dorsal fins in courtship displays. We found that fin coloration was more intense in low-predation sites and could be used to predict body condition. However, this predictive relationship was apparent only in populations subject to predation risk. We demonstrate an important role for ecological signaling cost in communication and show that ecological heterogeneity drives interpopulation variation in both the intensity and the reliabilit...

Community resocialization via instillation of family values through a novel group therapy approach: A pilot study.
Set within a fragmented community, The Family: People Helping People (Family) project is a group therapy model that aims to facilitate cultural resocialization through personal transformation. The Family models a nuclear family, and uses a novel, open discussion approach to address various psychosocial issues within the context of the Bahamian society. A pilot study investigated changes in disenfranchised individuals who participated in The Family over a 6-month period, and revealed some significant changes in emotional and behavioral trends after treatment. Statistical analysis of the pilot study showed significant decrea...

Epidemiology of Ciguatera in Florida.
Abstract Ciguatera is the most commonly reported marine food-borne illness worldwide. Because there is a biological plausibility that ciguatera may be impacted by long-term climate variability and Florida is on the northern border of the geographic distribution of ciguatera, it is important to update our understanding of its epidemiology in Florida. We performed an analysis of 291 reports in Florida from 2000 to 2011 and an e-mail survey of 5,352 recreational fishers to estimate incidence and underreporting and identify high risk demographic groups, fish types, and catch locations. Incidence was 5.6 per 10...
