Development and application of DETECTR-based rapid detection for pathogenic Bacillusanthracis
We present a novel screening and diagnostic option for pathogenic B. anthracis that can be performed on a user-friendly portable device. Based on its proven reliability, sensitivity, specificity and simplicity, our proposed method can be readily adapted to detect pathogenic B. anthracis, anthrax and biothreats.PMID:36781250 | DOI:10.1016/j.aca.2023.340891 (Source: Analytica Chimica Acta)

Elevation determines the spatial risk of Anthrax outbreaks in Karnataka, India
In this study, village level anthrax outbreak locations from Karnataka (1997-2016) were geo-referenced and predictive risk map was developed using temporally Fourier Processed remotely sensed variables. A non-linear discriminant analysis approach was used to develop the risk map for Karnataka. Elevation was identified as top predictor variable in the 10 variables selected. The predicted risk map showed good accuracy and validation statistics when evaluated using different metrics (Kappa, sensitivity, specificity, AUC). The predicted risk map also showed good correspondence with past outbreaks. Further, we used Bayesian Pen...

U.S. scientists brace for tighter scrutiny of potentially risky research
Federally funded scientists who work with potentially harmful bacteria, viruses, and other agents could soon face a major expansion of U.S. government oversight. An expert group last week recommended broadening rules that require universities and funding agencies to determine whether proposed studies count as dual-use research—work that carries the risk of intentionally or accidentally creating a bioweapon. Currently, such reviews are only required for experiments involving 15 dangerous agents. But the panel argues the reviews should now extend to work with all human, plant, and animal pathogens, even those causing only ...

Assessment of community perceptions and risk to common zoonotic diseases among communities living at the human-livestock-wildlife interface in Nakuru West, Kenya: A participatory epidemiology approach
ConclusionThe participants knew the zoonotic diseases common in the area and how the diseases can be acquired. We recommend increased involvement of the community in epidemio-surveillance of zoonotic diseases at the human-wildlife-livestock interface. (Source: PLoS Neglected Tropical Diseases)

Anthrax Bio-surveillance of Livestock in Arua District, Uganda, 2017-2018
Acta Trop. 2023 Jan 21:106841. doi: 10.1016/j.actatropica.2023.106841. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAnthrax, caused by Bacillus anthracis, is a widespread zoonotic disease with many human cases, especially in developing countries. Even with its global distribution, anthrax is a neglected disease with scarce information about its actual impact on the community level. Due to the ecological dynamics of anthrax transmission at the wildlife-livestock interface, the Sub-Saharan Africa region becomes a high-risk zone for maintaining and acquiring the disease. In this regard, some subregions of Uganda are endemic to anthrax with ...
