Combining neurologic and blood pressure drugs reduces breast tumor development in mice
(Georgetown University Medical Center) Adding a medication used to treat epilepsy, bipolar disorder and migraines to a blood pressure medicine reversed some aspects of breast cancer in the offspring of mice at high risk of the disease because of the high fat diet fed to their mothers during pregnancy. Conversely, this treatment combination increased breast cancer development in the offspring whose mothers had not been fed a high fat diet during pregnancy.
Conclusion: Despite using a large cohort and highly controlled laboratory conditions, we found no differences in melatonin suppression between euthymic patients with bipolar I disorder and healthy controls. These findings do not support the notion that supersensitivity is a valid endophenotype in bipolar I disorder. PMID: 32096617 [PubMed - in process]
West Nile Virus (WNV) infection is the most common mosquito-borne illness in the United States. Most cases are asymptomatic or with mild symptoms. Older adults are more likely to have central nervous system (CNS) involvement, and a higher risk for mortality.
Nutrition plays a vital role in the older adult, as weight in older adults is used as a marker of health and wellness. Individualization of meals is very limited; therefore, it is essential to offer a well-balanced diet options. In this regard, the national guidelines for the older adult can offer guidance to direct the meal options. There are national guidelines from the US Departments of Health and Human Services and Agriculture with dietary recommendations for community-dwelling healthy older adults.
I love my work as a post-acute and long-term care geriatrician, and as a hospice and palliative medicine specialist. I freely admit that. Yes, there are plenty of headaches, including administrative and regulatory burdens, and there ’s the unfortunate reality that lots of the patients I become fond of die. But I believe that most of Caring’s readers feel the same way. In fact, I believe most people who choose to devote their life’s work to providing care to the vulnerable, dependent, and ill patients we look after love th eir work and consider it a calling — including arguably the most important mem...
CONCLUSIONS.: This study provided an atlas of genetic correlations between psychiatric disorders and plasma proteome, providing novel clues for pathogenetic and biomarkers, therapeutic studies of psychiatric disorders. PMID: 32093803 [PubMed - in process]
CONCLUSIONS.: Our results confirm the multidimensional nature of mania. Hyperactivity, increased speech, and thought disorder appear as core features of the clinical construct. The mood experience could be heterogeneous, depending on the co-occurrence of euphoric (elevated mood) and dysphoric (irritability and depressive mood) emotions of varying intensity. Results are also discussed regarding their relationship with other constitutive elements of bipolar disorder, such as mixed and depressive states. PMID: 32093802 [PubMed - in process]
CONCLUSIONS.: Despite sharing a lower IQ and a higher prevalence of psychiatric disorders, brain abnormalities in BDo appear less pronounced (but are not absent) than in SZo. Lower ICV in SZo implies that familial risk for schizophrenia has a stronger association with stunted early brain development than familial risk for bipolar disorder. CONCLUSIONS.: For adult patients with BD, initial and relapse prodromes of manic, hypomanic, and depressive episodes were identified. It is proposed that the most frequent prodromes found in this review be incorporated into a smartphone app that monitors the functioning of people at risk of BD and patients who have already been diagnosed. Data from this app would constitute a relevant source of big data. PMID: 32093795 [PubMed - in process]
Authors: Morris G, Maes M, Berk M, Carvalho AF, Puri BK Abstract Nutritional ketosis, induced via either the classical ketogenic diet or the use of emulsified medium-chain triglycerides, is an established treatment for pharmaceutical resistant epilepsy in children and more recently in adults. In addition, the use of oral ketogenic compounds, fractionated coconut oil, very low carbohydrate intake, or ketone monoester supplementation has been reported to be potentially helpful in mild cognitive impairment, Parkinson's disease, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and autistic spectrum disorder. In these and other neurode...
