Periodontitis: a newly identified comorbidity in psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis.

Periodontitis: a newly identified comorbidity in psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis. Expert Rev Clin Immunol. 2019 Dec 11;:1-8 Authors: Dalmády S, Kemény L, Antal M, Gyulai R Abstract Introduction: Psoriasis is a chronic autoimmune skin disease with strong genetic background and environmental triggers. Patients with psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis are at greater risk of developing other chronic and potentially severe comorbidities, such as psoriatic arthritis, hyperlipidemia, type 2 diabetes mellitus, obesity, metabolic syndrome, cardiovascular diseases or depression. Recently, accumulating epidemiologic, genetic and pathogenetic evidence indicates that psoriasis is also associated with periodontitis, a chronic progressive inflammatory disease, which may result in tooth loss without early and adequate therapy.Areas covered: In this review article we summarize and discuss in detail the available epidemiologic, genetic, microbiological and immunological links between psoriasis and periodontitis.Expert opinion: Periodontitis, via the immunomodulatory effect of the oral microbiota, may play both a direct and indirect role in the development or exacerbation of psoriasis, and may influence the efficacy of antipsoriatic therapy. These new findings indicate a need for increased awareness, early recognition and focus on prevention of periodontitis for patients with psoriasis. PMID: 31825680 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Authors: Gaudiano BA, Davis CH, Miller IW, Uebelacker L Abstract A common setting where depression is identified and treated is in primary care, where there is a need for low-intensity and cost-effective interventions to be used as part of a stepped-care model. The current study involved a pilot, parallel-group, randomized controlled trial of a video self-help intervention for primary care patients based on Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). The intervention, called LifeStories, consisted of storytelling vignettes of patients describing their use of ACT-consistent coping skills for depression. Primary care pa...

CONCLUSIONS: The 2019 EULAR/ACR criteria for SLE had comparable performance to the 2012 SLICC criteria regarding diagnostic sensitivity and specificity in Korean population of SLE and other rheumatic diseases. However, the new criteria could not reach higher specificity than the 2012 SLICC criteria. PMID: 32083550 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

CONCLUSIONS: Testing for autoantibodies against both Ro peptides may aim diagnosis, classify clinical manifestations in disease entities and define prognosis in certain autoimmune disorders. A distinct weight could be given to the isolated anti-Ro specificities in the SS classification criteria. PMID: 32083547 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

CONCLUSIONS: We found DEGs and DEMs in FM patients through bioinformatics analysis, which may be involved in the occurrence and development of FM and serve as potential targets for diagnosis and treatment. PMID: 32083545 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

CONCLUSIONS: In this cohort the most frequent damage item was renal and was related to the disease itself. Damage score was higher in patients with more severe disease and treated more aggressively. Our results suggest that more effective treatment options are needed in a subgroup of patients with IgA vasculitis to prevent the damage related with the vasculitis, especially with more severe disease. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings suggest that improvement in MMP-3 levels is key to predicting the clinical efficacy of abatacept. Closer attention paid not only to major clinical indices, but also changes in MMP-3 levels, could improve our ability to optimise clinical results when treating bio-switch patients. CONCLUSIONS: GC treatment has implications in CVR, despite in SSc GC doses administered are lower than in other autoimmune diseases (in our cohort even prednisone ≤10 mg daily was associated with ED). GC may be associated with an early vascular damage in these patients, which could lead to changes in FMD, ED and finally AP. On the other hand, optimum levels of 25(OH)D3 seemed to be beneficial against vascular damage. PMID: 32083542 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]
