Identifying environmental factors associated with the development of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a matter of intense research. Lactation has been shown to exert beneficial effects in both the child and the mother. Among its beneficial effects, lactation is known to lower triglycerides and to increase insulin sensitivity. In this issue of the Journal, Ajmera et al. studied if longer duration of lactation is associated with a lower prevalence of NAFLD in women. The study included a large cohort of young women who delivered one post-baseline birth or more and were followed for 25  years.
