Podcast: A Mindful Approach to Overcoming Addiction
More than 20 million Americans have a substance use disorder. Addiction is powerful and can easily destroy lives. Many approaches exist to fight such disorders, including the familiar “twelve-step” methods, but none of them have tremendous success rates. Now, two counselors present a way to use mindfulness in the fight against addiction. They speak with our hosts, discussing the evidence that mindfulness works and how it can be used to treat addiction. They speak of their new book on this topic and explain how it can be used by the reader. They also talk about forgiveness as a powerful therapy tool, both for...

Podcast: Fighting Your Fears with Kate Courageous
Fear is something we all face in our lives. For some of us (including some who don’t realize it), fear affects our behavior in profound ways, because we haven’t developed the courage to change this. Many people believe that courage is the same as fearlessness. In reality, courage is what allows us to do something in spite of the fear, whether it’s running into a burning building to save someone, touching someone’s pet snake to get over a phobia, or even just asking someone out on a date. Over time, we fall into habits, developing fear-based traits, such as pessimism. Our guest for this episode breaks it all ...

Podcast: What Does It Mean to be Transgender?
Gender transitioning has always been a topic that makes many people uncomfortable. And ever since Bruce became Kaitlin, it’s been a frequent topic of conversation. Most of the discomfort comes from unfamiliarity, from presumptions, and (of course) from bigotry. In this episode, two transgender women explain what it means to be transgender, both generally and personally. They talk about their experiences going back more than twenty years. They discuss how transitioning, and the science of it, changed over the decades. And they offer their views on what they believe are the most important things for society to know about i...

Nearly all adults in the U.S. have experienced a traumatic event in their lives. Up to 20% of these will go on to develop Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). This is not a condition exclusive to veterans (although they do experience it at a higher rate than the general population). There are several methods used to address PTSD in therapy. Our guest this week presents a new type of treatment, one that promises to do more than just treat the symptoms, but get to the root of the problem. The goal is not to just survive PTSD, but to thrive in spite of it. . Subscribe to Our Show! And Remember to Review Us! ...

The Widening Gap in Dementia Care and One Woman ’s Crusade to Address it
According to Alzheimer’s Disease International (ADI), someone in the world develops dementia every 3 seconds. An estimated 50 million people had dementia in 2017. That number is expected to grow to 75 million people by 2030. In 2017, Dr. Anitha Rao, a board certified geriatric neurologist and CEO of neurocern, published a paper that highlighted the uneven distribution of trained dementia specialists in the United States. Her paper pointed to 20 States that were “Dementia Deserts” where there was insufficient access to specialists given the number of Dementia patients. Without intervention, this gap in Dementia care w...

Dippers in the Brecon Beacons
If you live in the South East you are very unlikely to stumble across a Dipper (Cinclus cinclus) unless you venture further afield, heading north, west or into Wales. This bird spends its time on the rocks that litter clear mountain streams and broad rocky rivers rather than any of the deep and cloudy, fast-moving waterways of East Anglia and the counties that surround London. These shots are on the River Usk some way west of the town of Aberhonddu (Brecon), Powys, Wales, Having not snapped any in Teesdale on another trip, where the upper Tees fits the Dipper’s requirements perfectly, I was pleased to at last photog...

Podcast: Money Isn ’t the Problem – Our Beliefs About It Are
Money is the root of all arguments… or might seem so, for many couples. But why is this the case? What is it about money that makes it such an issue? Kiné Corder is what you might call a “financial therapist,” a psychotherapist who specializes in financial issues her clients are struggling with. She explains the way our money beliefs are formed at a far younger age than one might think, why money is such a hot point in our relationships, our warped concept of “value,” and how to be more conscious about our relationships with and conversations about money. . Revenge of the Giant Hogweed
If the day of the triffids were ever to come, then Heracleum mantegazzianum, would be the henchmen. The giant hogweed, also known as the cartwheel-flower, the giant cow parsnip, hogsbane, or giant cow parsley, is a nasty plant. It is called hogweed because the flowers smell of pigs. But, that is not the worst thing about it. You may have read in the news recently of the crippling effects it had on an unwitting Welsh gardener. His bare legs brushing against the plant developed nasty and deep blisters in the coming days and awful pain. He is apparently still unable to walk because of the damage done by the plant. The plan...

Podcast: From Tragedy to Transformation – How a Psychologist is Born
Linda Meyers was twenty-eight and the mother of three young boys when her mother, after a lifetime of threats, died by suicide. Staggered by conflicting feelings of relief and remorse, she believed that the best way to give meaning to her mother’s death was to make changes to her own life. Bolstered by the women’s movement of the seventies, she left her marriage, went to college, started a successful family acting business, and established a fulfilling career. She recounts all of this in a memoir titled The Tell, and speaks candidly with our hosts to share her fascinating and inspiring story. . Subscribe to Our Sho...

Koalas, Chlamydia, Microbiomania, Katie Dahlhausen, John Oliver, Russell Crowe, and me.
This study aimed to use 16S rRNA gene sequences derived from koala feces to characterize the intestinal microbiome of koalas throughout antibiotic treatment and identify specific taxa associated with koala health after treatment. Although differences in the alpha diversity were observed in the intestinal flora between treated and untreated koalas and between koalas treated with different antibiotics, these differences were not statistically significant. The alpha diversity of microbial communities from koalas that lived through antibiotic treatment versus those who did not was significantly greater, however. Beta diversity...

Royal Heinie
I suppose it ' s just harmless fun, but the obsession of the American public with British royalty seems bizarre to me. That a B-list American celebrity is about to marry a parasite on British society (who by the way, is not in the line of succession to the throne unless his brother and his family are wiped out, not that it matters) is the biggest consumer of TV time and column inches even as, well, certain other stuff is happening, seems disconcerting..If I am correctly informed, the colonies who have since become the United States fought a war to get out from under the British throne. Since then, the rest of Europe has el...

In addition to offering his views on the Center’s situation, he also shares his method for preventing community opposition before the opening of a facility. He also offers his opinions on why people are so afraid of such facilities, how to minimize or eliminate that fear, and reflects on the emotional impact of such opposition, which often can’t help being interpreted as a pe...
