You Need Some Smarter Clothing
BY KIM BELLARD Much as I’d love to write about Instagram’s feud with the Kardashians over changes to the Instagram feed, and how that and proposed changes to Facebook’s feed reflect Meta’s efforts to combat TikTok’s growing influence, I’ve already given healthcare plenty of warnings about TikTok.  Instead, I’ll write about something else that the Kardashians care about: fashion. Well, not fashion per se, but clothing. If the old, sexist statement was “clothes make the man,” then soon we may be saying “clothes make your health.”  The Washington Post got my attention when it report...

We Need To Make Sure We Are Optimising Our Approach And Use Of Telehealth Now The Pandemic May Be Settling!

National Audit of Care at the End of Life: mental health spotlight audit summary report, England and Wales (2021/22)
This report finds that whilst thorough scrutiny of all deaths occurring in mental health services is demonstrated to be well embedded, policies and guidelines around end of life care delivery are not as well developed. It concludes that whilst working with dying patients is less common on mental health inpatient wards, there is an opportunity for mental health providers to give greater support to staff and give the appropriate training needed to deliver end of life care if necessary.ReportNHS Benchmarking Network - news (Source: Health Management Specialist Library)

The Macro View – Health, Economics, and Politics and the Big Picture. What I Am Watching Here And Abroad.
The objective most consistent with recent operations is to conquer Luhansk, Donetsk, and Kherson, with a view to their eventual annexation and Russification. But not only are they some way from achieving that (w ith much of Donetsk still in Ukrainian hands and the Russia position in Kherson highly contested) it would also require an explicit Ukrainian surrender for it to serve as the basis for a declaration of victory. That will not be forthcoming.-----https://www.afr.com/world/europe/how-britain-giggled-its-way-into-crisis-20220710-p5b0giHow Britain giggled its way into crisisBoris Johnson has exposed the costs of Britain...

The Macro View – Health, Economics, and Politics and the Big Picture. What I Am Watching Here And Abroad.
July 14, 2022 Edition-----The biggest news this week was the assassination of the ex-PM of Japan – Shinzo Abe – who was a good friend to OZ incidentally. In the US we have had a wind-up to a busy summit season – NATO etc – and the ongoing war in Ukraine which is becoming a deepening, protracted and horrible situation which it seems hard to resolve sadly. In the UK Boris is out but not gone and the battle for the succession is off and rolling. In OZ we have Albo back and we need to work out what to mitigate these various natural disasters and actually get on with it!!!! The response has been pathetic so far I reckon!--...

Local Purple Hairstreaks
I found a colony of White-letter Hairstreaks in the middle of Manor Farm Wood, Rampton. I don’t think I’ve heard of anyone mentioning this species in this woodland before. It’s a relatively young woodland. The butterflies were emerging from a tall blackthorn and coming fairly low to nectar on bramble and flitting back into the blackthorn. There are elms in the vicinity, the foodplant of this species’ larvae. I was then surprised to see another hairstreak flying in the top of a willow tree on the Lode-side edge of the same woodland – Purple Hairstreak! Male  Purple Hairstreak about 15 metres a...

People with no mind ’s eye have less vivid and detailed memories
By Matthew Warren When we’re asked to imagine a scene or object, most of us are able to conjure up an image in our mind’s eye. But about 2-5% of the population can’t do this: they have a condition called aphantasia, and are unable to produce mental imagery at all. Now a study published in Cognition has found that aphantasia can affect memory abilities too. The researchers report that aphantasics have less detailed and rich memories for events in their lives: a finding that not only reveals more about the condition, but also highlights the key role of mental imagery in memory generally. Past work had sho...

Cinahl strategy for finding studies from the UK
This is based on the Medline filter in Ayiku, L.et al.(2017) ‘The Medline UK filter: development and validation of a geographic search filter to retrieve research about the UK from OVID Medline’,Health Information and Libraries Journal 34(3), pp.200-216.  That filter isdiscussed in another post.I have tested it to see if it results in error messages (it does not) but it is not yet validated.  The Medline filter it is based on has been validated - see the article referenced above for details. This Cinahl filter does not specify fields, so searches all fields.  In line S4, gb with no punctuation and g.b. wi...

Paul Krugman and the “Ersatz” Theory of Private Currencies
George SelginAlthough I ' ve devoted many essays here to exploding myths about historical private currencies, there ' s one I ' ve yet to directly challenge. That ' s the belief that such currencies only thrive in the absence of official alternatives. Otherwise, the argument goes, people would drop private currencies like so many hot rocks. Since this opinion assumes that private currencies are inevitably inferior to official ones, I hereby christen it the " ersatz " theory of private currency. Note that " currency " means circulating or (in today ' s digital context)peer-to-peer exchange media: nobody denies that other so...
