Herpes Zoster Vaccination Reduces Alzheimer's Risk
Evidence exists for herpesvirus infection to increase the risk of suffering Alzheimer's disease. The evidence is mixed, however, with some studies showing no effect. There is some suggestion that the interaction of multiple viruses is the real contributing effect, which is why looking at just one virus type may produce problematic data. Researchers here show that vaccination against herpes zoster reduces Alzheimer's risk, though one might as to whether this is because of reduced viral impact, or because vaccinations can produce a trained immunity effect, reducing chronic inflammation in older people. There is grow...

M ôn Mam Cymru – Ynys M ôn, the Mother of Wales
TL:DR – Modern-day equivalent of the holiday snap slideshow a record of our most recent trip to Wales, specifically the Isle of Anglesey, Ynys Môn. May 2023, we finally got around to visiting Anglesey (Ynys Môn, sometimes referred to as Môn Mam Cymru meaning “Môn, Mother of Wales”, for its agricultural productivity) just off north-west Wales (Cymru). We stayed in the seaside town of Rhosneigr right next to RAF Valley and with beach views of Snowdonia, Yr Wyddfa. Thankfully, we only really had airbase activity and noise on the last day of our week there. Although that in itself was fun to watch as tra...

Saving babies ’ lives 2023: a report on progress
This report pulls together data from different sources to present a shared understanding of the burden of pregnancy and baby loss across the UK. Overall, it paints a concerning picture with progress stalling and a risk of going backwards. It finds that, in England, the Government ’s target to halve the number of stillbirths and neonatal deaths by 2025 compared to 2010 levels is not on track, and there is no current target or ambition for reducing baby deaths in Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland. It also highlights that despite Government commitments to act on the finding s of recent reviews of maternity services, this ...

A Brecon Beacon of light in the winter
TL:DR – The Brecon Beacons are a delightful place to visit any time of year, but a winter visit is magical when the sun shines on snowy caps. Just back from a lovely trip to the Brecon Beacons in Cymru to stay with friends. Didn’t do as much walking as we normally would because I have an obstinate ankle injury. It was a bit awkward getting into stable positions to photograph wildlife or indeed anything else, but I had a go, as you do. Snow-capped views of Pen y Fan and Corn Du as seen from our friends’ back garden – what a view! European Dipper, Cinclus cinclus, perched on a mossy stump. The Dipper...

The Dipper is so-called because of its bobbing action when perched like this or on a rock, although it also dips its head under water to hunt invertebrates, fi...

Choosing the best Mastodon server
TL:DR – There are lots of Mastodon servers, choosing the best is down to personal needs. Choose one in your niche that has a good number of users, more than one admin, and a good financial base. If you’re new to Mastodon, then have a quick read of my Mastodon FAQ to get an idea of what it’s all about. Social media tool Mastodon is essentially a network of connected websites all running the same software. Users refer to these websites as instances. You can think of an instance as being a specialist group on another famous social media system. But each instance or server is owned and managed independently ...

What Scientists and Historians Understand: Without Truth, Progress Is An Impossibility
BY MIKE MAGEE “This too will pass, honey!” That’s what my mother used to say when any of my eleven brothers and sisters or I seemed to be overwhelmed by whatever. And largely, now, three quarters of a century since my birth, she was mostly right. Whether in personal lives or the life of our nation, over a span of time, the slope has been slight, but upward. But there are weeks, like this past one, where we are forced to witness the beating death of an innocent 29 year old black man at the hands of police in the very city where Martin Luther King was slaughtered 55 years ago, when it would be easy to lose hope. ...

Which Mastodon server should I use?
If you’re new to Mastodon, then have a quick read of my Mastodon FAQ to get an idea of what it’s all about. Once you’ve done that or if you’re ready to dive in, here’s a list of the instances/servers that are most commonly being used by the people I followed on twitter who added a Mastodon ID or link to their bio and I could find via Debirdify. Because they’re all federated you can see what’s happening on other instances, but you might want to opt for an instance in your area to begin with, or perhaps one where you know contacts and colleagues are already active. I first tried Mast...
