Understanding the fundamental role of racism in ethnic inequities in Covid-19 vaccine hesitancy
Centre on the Dynamics of Ethnicity - The briefing from the Runnymede Trust and the University of Manchester ’s Centre on the Dynamics of Ethnicity uses data from the UK Household Longitudinal Study to show that institutional and community-level factors, driven by structural and institutional racism, explain the large majority of ethnic inequities in vaccination rates.BriefingPress release (Source: Health Management Specialist Library)

Republicanism is bad for your health . . .
and might even kill you.Nancy Krieger and colleagues studied Covid-19 mortality rates and stress on hospital capacity in all 435 congressional districts, and its association with the political ideology of the relevant congresscritters and whether there was one-party control of state government. Xish
Earlier I discussed the insane excesses of Xi Jinping ' s " zero Covid " policy. The economic and social costs of the draconian, and doomed, effort to end transmission of the virus in China were unsustainable. The policy provoked the first mass protests of his rule, at great peril to the protesters, created supply chain shortages around the world, and severely damaged the Chinese economy. So yeah, not a good idea. But . . .He suddenly turned 180 on a dime and eliminated all mitigations measures. The result has been equally catastrophic. Eric Fiegl-Ding is an epidemiologist who became well known as an early Cassandra about ...

The promises and limits of a fentanyl vaccine
“Fentanyl Vaccine a Potential ‘Game Changer’ for Opioid Crisis,” declares a Medscape headline. “Fentanyl Vaccine Delivers Promising Results in Trial,” reports an industry website. “A Vaccine Against Deadly Fentanyl Might Be Near,” promises US News & World Report. Only the fourth headline I encounter puts the news into proper perspective: “New Fentanyl Vaccine Eliminates The Read more… The promises and limits of a fentanyl vaccine originally appeared in KevinMD.com. In an interview, Dr. Landry shares with us her scientific journey, research with nanoparticles, and interests outside of the lab. Q: What sparked your interest in science? Courts Should Take “Jawboning” Claims Seriously
Thomas A. BerryMark Changizi, Daniel Kotzin, and Michael Senger were frequent Twitter users who often wrote with skepticism or criticism of the government ’s approach to COVID-19, such as questioning the effectiveness of masks or vaccines. At various times, they had posts removed by Twitter for allegedly violating its misinformation policy. Eventually, they were each banned or suspended from Twitter altogether. All three have sued, but they aren ’t suing Twitter to be reinstated. Instead, they’re suing various federal government agencies and officials. They allege that Twitter was coerced by multiple formal government...

The protests in China against Xi ' s draconian " zero Covid " policies have inspired some loosely connected thoughts. The first is that, obviously, as with any public health intervention, we need to weight the costs and benefits. The cost of essentially totally shutting down city neighborhoods, factories, even whole cities, and not allowing people to leave their houses for days or weeks on end, is incalculable. Far less stringent policies proved unacceptable to many people elsewhere, though not necessarily based on good information. Nevertheless there were costs to people ' s social and emotional well-being, to children ' ...

Modified mRNA Demonstrates 10-Fold Protein Production
Scientists at Hong Kong University of Science and Technology came up with a technique to increase the efficiency and potentially the efficacy of mRNA therapeutics. mRNA molecules have what is called a poly-A tail, which is basically a string of adenine nucleotides at one end. These researchers discovered that by replacing some of these nucleotides in the mRNA tail with cytidine, a cytosine base with a ribose sugar attached, that they could enhance the resulting protein production of the mRNA and increase its stability and life-span. The technique could lead to more effective mRNA therapies and vaccines, potentially enablin...

“True, True, and Unrelated” in the age of “Product Placement/Embedded Marketing.”
BY MIKE MAGEE This is “high grandparenting season” at our home when you go “The Extra Mile.” That means it is possible on certain days on or between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day to find up to 20 children and grandchildren under our roof. With my wife one of ten, and me, one of twelve, we are no strangers to chaos. Our kids believe we feed off it, and maybe they’re right. With over 150 years under our collective belts, we two are – if nothing else – optimistic, resilient, and somewhat wiser then we were in our early years. For example, we know that the mere temporal or geographic approximation of ...

What Biden Has Gotten Right on Immigration
David J. BierPresident Biden ’s handling of immigration is the subject of intense scrutiny and criticism from all sides. Much of this criticism is right, but the president has also implemented many positive policies. While it often acted too slowly and has much more to do, the new administration has already reversed the most important restrictionist policies imposed by the Trump administration.Major Big Picture ActionsEnding the “security” travel bansOn January 20, 2021, President Bidenfully rescinded President Trump ’s ban on immigration and certain travel for nationals of Iran, North Korea, Somalia, Libya, Syria,...

The Top 10 Digital Health Stories Of 2022
Edging towards the end of the year, it is time for a summary of how digital health progressed in 2022. It is easy to get lost in the noise – I myself shared well over a thousand articles, studies and news items between January and the end of November 2022. Thus, just like in 2021, 2020 (and so on), I picked the 10 topics I believe will have the most significance in the future of healthcare. 1. The Rise Of Digital Therapeutics (DTx) Unlike a number of unsubstantial hypes (NFTs, Metaverse to name a few), we see DTx as a meaningful trend that has the capacity to bring major short-term improvements in personalised ...
