History of chronic gastritis: How our perceptions have changed
World J Gastroenterol. 2024 Apr 7;30(13):1851-1858. doi: 10.3748/wjg.v30.i13.1851.ABSTRACTCurrently, the diagnostic strategy for chronic gastritis (CG) is aimed not just at fixing the presence of gastric mucosal inflammation, but also at gastric cancer (GC) risk stratification in a particular patient. Modern classification approach with the definition of the stage of gastritis determines the need, activities and frequency of dynamic monitoring of a patient. However, this attitude to the patient suffering from CG was far from always. The present publication is a literature review describing the key milestones in the history...

Predictive role of ureteral wall thickness and patient characteristics in endoscopic treatment outcomes for ureteral stricture disease following stone surgery
ConclusionsOur current results indicated that assessment of UWT value at the obstructing stone could be helpful enough to predict the likelihood of failure following endoscopic management of strictures with high sensitivity and specificity. Evaluation of this particular parameter could let the endourologists to look for more rational treatment alternatives with necessary measures taken on time. (Source: World Journal of Urology)

The prevalence of functional dyspepsia using Rome IV questionnaire among chronic kidney disease patients
Conclusion: The prevalence of FD amongst CKD patients is 14.7% with EPS the predominant subtype. Male patients, HCV patients, patients with higher CKD stages and highly impaired eGFR (low eGFR) are more probable to have FD.PMID:38655865 | DOI:10.1080/0886022X.2024.2344651 (Source: Renal Failure)

Achalasia Following SARS-CoV-2 Infection: A Case Report and Review of Literature
We present a case of a 40-year-old female without any history of achalasia who developed symptoms of the condition following a confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection. Unusually, multiple esophageal ulcers were identified, which are not typically associated with achalasia.DIAGNOSIS: Achalasia and esophageal ulcers were confirmed through a series of examinations, including barium swallow, CT scan, and upper endoscopy. Furthermore, immunohistochemical staining of esophageal biopsy specimens revealed the presence of the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein, suggesting direct viral involvement.INTERVENTIONS: The patient was treated with calcium ch...

Transcutaneous electric nerve stimulation of acupuncture points improves tolerance in adults undergoing diagnostic upper gastrointestinal endoscopy: a single-center, double-blinded, randomized controlled trial
ConclusionsAcu-TENS improved OGDS success and enhanced patients ’ experiences during non-sedated OGDS. It demonstrated safety with no side effects and reduced the procedure completion time. It could be used as an adjunct in non-sedated diagnostic OGDS. (Source: Surgical Endoscopy)

The 1-cm lower calyx calculus: SWT, URS or Mini-PCNL? Guidelines vs. reality.
Aktuelle Urol. 2024 Apr 23. doi: 10.1055/a-2290-7250. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTUrinary stones of the upper urinary tract can be considered a widespread public health concern due to their high incidence and prevalence and their health policy-related and financial implications. A significant proportion of newly diagnosed kidney stones are lower-pole stones, i.e., stones affecting the lower calyx group of the renal pelvicalyceal system. These are often diagnosed by chance, i.e., as incidental findings during ultrasound or CT scans performed for other reasons, or as "secondary stones" detected during the diagnostic work-u...

Deep learning and capsule endoscopy: Automatic multi-brand and multi-device panendoscopic detection of vascular lesions
Conclusions This is the first proof-of-concept artificial intelligence deep learning model developed for pan-endoscopic automatic detection of vascular lesions during CE. The diagnostic performance of this CNN in multi-brand devices addresses an essential issue of technological interoperability, allowing it to be replicated in multiple technological settings. Gastritis cystica profunda presenting as an ulcerated lesion
A 57-year-old man was referred to our hospital due to repeated upper abdominal discomfort for more than 1 year. Endoscopy was performed 4 times in the past and gastric cancer was suspected, but biopsy showed inflammation. In our hospital, endoscopy showed a 2.5 cm diameter depressed lesion on the gastric angle (Fig. 1A) and magnifying narrow band imaging observed the central surface structure of the lesion disappeared (Fig. 1B). Endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) revealed a 0.8 × 0.7 cm anechoic area in the submucosa (Fig. (Source: Digestive and Liver Disease)

Solitary Isolated Oropharyngeal Neurofibroma Presenting With Dysphagia in the Setting of Von Recklinghausen's Disease
Ear Nose Throat J. 2024 Apr 18:1455613241249022. doi: 10.1177/01455613241249022. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTA 24-year-old man with von Recklinghausen's disease presented with complaints of difficulty in swallowing for 6 months and change of voice for 3 months. He also had recent-onset difficulty in breathing. Telelaryngoscopy and subsequent contrast-enhanced computed tomography scan revealed a well-defined, smooth submucosal mass in the oropharynx (attached to the posterior pharyngeal wall, superior to the level of left aryepiglottic fold), obscuring the ipsilateral pyriform fossa, and nearly blocking the pharyngeal lum...
