Whole Body Donation – Not Adequately Regulated
Unlike organ donation, which is heavily regulated, whole body donation is not. What happens to a donated body depends on the kind of center to which it goes. For example, Medical Schools - teach medical students Universities - teach forensics Military - learn how bombs affect bodies A new lawsuit alleges that the actual use of a donated body exceeded the scope of consent. Jim Stauffer signed a form authorizing medical research on his mother’s body. He also checked a box prohibiting military, traffic-safety and other non-medical experiments. In fact, Stauffer’s body became part of an Army experiment to meas...

The know-do gap: does social media help change things?
This post is prompted by a Facebook post from Connor Gleadhill asking “in what way is SoMe contributing to knowledge translation (KT)? I’m interested in the experience of those tagged and if anyone is aware if it has been rigorously tested. As far as I’m aware it hasn’t. Is it simply a confirmation bias arena? We are humans after all, and we curate our experience on SoMe.” Oh such a great question and one reason I still hang out on social media! I’ve been blogging since 2007, two years before the famous Body in Mind (who have just announced they won’t post any more content)....

Smart Bandage Pulls Skin Together to Speed Healing
Wounds on the skin are usually treated with bandages that protect the area and keep it moist, but which don’t actively help to promote healing. Researchers at Harvard and McGill universities have now created a mechanotherapy bandage that actually works to close the wound, keeps it protected from microbes, and speeds up healing much faster that existing products. The researchers have dubbed their approach as “active adhesive dressings” (AADs), and they believe that soon these may be coming to a pharmacy near you. The new bandages are possible thanks to heat-responsive hydrogels that are strong and, ...

Notes on the 2019 Ending Age-Related Diseases Conference in New York
I recently attended the second Ending Age-Related Diseases conference in New York, hosted by the Life Extension Advocacy Foundation (LEAF). The mix of attendees was much the same as last year: an even split between scientists, entrepreneurs, investors, patient advocates, and interested onlookers, all focused on the treatment of aging as a medical condition. The presentations were similarly a mix of scientists talking about their research programs, entrepreneurs presenting on the data produced by their companies, and investors discussing the state of the industry. For my part, I have already presented several times t...

Teens & Privacy: Everything Online or in an App Can Last Forever
Hey teens, I have something to tell you and it may not be something you want to hear. Sorry about that in advance. But actually what I have to say is good for everyone to hear, because I’m sure the misconceptions about online privacy don’t end just with your age group. In talking with many teenagers over the past few years, it’s become clear that some of you don’t understand what privacy is, why you should value it, and why you might want to think twice about it. As the Kyle Kashuv case illustrates, nothing that you think is private today will necessarily stay that way forever. Kyle Kashuv Doesn...

Artificial Intelligence In Mental Health Care
Could the advancement of machine and deep learning algorithms be harnessed meaningfully in the area of mental health? Could depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, or any other mental disorder be quantified so that technology could somehow add positively to their diagnostics or treatment? We tried to explore the uses of artificial intelligence in mental health care, and stumbled upon smart algorithms that support clinicians with early detection and diagnostics of mental health issues, with the flagging of suicide risks, and other ones that help patients manage their condition through counselling and constantly being t...

Senator Sanders ’ Not So Great Free College Proposal
Sen.Bernie Sanders proposes free college for all and the cancellation of all student debt.Americans have watched the price of four-year college rise faster than inflation for several decades. This phenomenon is complex and can be attributed to several factors. Two of the most important factors are:the rising cost of education and campus amenities (keeping technology current, expanding physical education facilities, more administrative positions, improved meal plans, and so on).students ’ increased willingness and ability to pay higher prices, owing to easy access to government subsidies. The first point is enabled by the ...
