Small Molecule Antagonists of the DNA Repair ERCC1/XPA Protein-Protein Interaction
ChemMedChem. 2024 Feb 1:e202300648. doi: 10.1002/cmdc.202300648. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe DNA excision repair protein ERCC1 and the DNA damage sensor protein, XPA are highly overexpressed in patient samples of cisplatin-resistant solid tumors including lung, bladder, ovarian, and testicular cancer. The repair of cisplatin-DNA crosslinks is dependent upon nucleotide excision repair (NER) that is modulated by protein-protein binding interactions of ERCC1, the endonuclease, XPF, and XPA. Thus, inhibition of their function is a potential therapeutic strategy for the selective sensitization of tumors to DNA-damaging pl...

Advancing survivorship at a comprehensive cancer center: integrating clinical care, education and research initiatives  at Northwestern Medicine and the Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center
We report to the CoC on SCP delivery, dietitian encounters, and DEXA scans. For the last decade, our Cancer Survivorship Institute has aligned the efforts of clinicians, researchers, and educators. The institute promotes evidence-based care, high-impact research, and state-of-the-science educational programs for professionals, survivors, and the community. Future plans include expansion of clinical services and funding for applied research centered on the unique needs of post-treatment cancer survivors.Implications for Cancer SurvivorsThe survivorship programs at Northwestern Medicine and the Robert H. Functional paraganglioma, an uncommon cause of seminoma metastasis, diagnostic and therapeutic management
We report a 62-year-old male, with history of uncontrolled hypertension (3 drugs) in who, it was found an incidentally left retroperitoneal hypervascular tumor (5.7 x 3.5 cm) in the CT. It was demonstrated contact between tumor and left renal artery and ureter, without regional lymphadenopathy. The patient was asymptomatic, but had increased of norepinephrine (1141.1 pg/mL), epinephrine (93.3 pg/mL) and serotonin blood levels (264.1 g/L). The MRI confirm the tumor, with serotonin affinity in the 68Galium-Edotreotide PET/CT (DOTATATE) but not in the MIBG/Scan. Therefore, a paraganglioma was the suspected diagnosis. Tumor...

The prognostic impact of treatment centralization in patients with testicular germ cell tumors: analysis of hospital-based cancer registry data in Japan
ConclusionOur results indicate that stage II and III TGCT patients experience lower survival rates at low-volume institutions and would benefit from treatment centralization. (Source: International Journal of Clinical Oncology)

SMARCB1-Deficient Skull Base Chondrosarcoma with 12p Duplication Presenting as Somatic-Type Malignancy Arising from Metastatic Seminoma
AbstractSomatic-type malignancy (STM) can occur infrequently within a primary or metastatic testicular germ cell tumor (TGCT) and is associated with dismal prognosis and survival. STM with chondrosarcomatous features is exceedingly rare and head and neck involvement has not been previously documented. A 39-year-old white man presented with nasal obstruction and epistaxis. Imaging disclosed a 6.9-cm expansile tumor involving the nasal cavity and skull base with intraorbital and intracranial extension. The histopathologic properties of the tumor were compatible with chondrosarcoma, grade II-III. Immunohistochemically, malign...

Trends in the use of testicular prostheses in Germany: a total population analysis from 2006 –2021
ConclusionThis study shows that implantation of testicular prostheses is steadily increasing. Explantation rates are low. Besides testicular cancer transgender surgeries were the main driver for increasing case numbers in recent years. (Source: Andrology)

Machine learning-based CT texture analysis in the differentiation of testicular masses
ConclusionUntil now, this is the first study that applied CT texture analysis (CTTA) to assess the heterogeneity of testicular tumors. LR model based on CTTA might be a promising non-invasive tool for the diagnosis and differentiation of testicular masses. The accurate diagnosis of testicular masses would assist urologists in correct preoperative and perioperative decision making. (Source: Frontiers in Oncology)

Apparent diffusion coefficient histogram in the differentiation of benign and malignant testicular tumors
Conclusion: The HA parameters showed value in differentiating benign and malignant testicular neoplasms. The entire tumor VOI placement method was preferable to the VOI placement method excluding cystic, calcified, hemorrhagic, and necrotic portions in measuring HA parameters. Using this VOI segmentation, maximum ADC performed best in discriminating benign and malignant testicular lesions, followed by ADC variance and skewness.PMID:38169660 | PMC:PMC10758141 | DOI:10.7150/ijms.88486 (Source: International Journal of Medical Sciences)
