Hair loss during and after breast cancer therapy
This article reviews the underlying mechanisms, etiology, prevention strategies, and treatment options for chemotherapy-induced alopecia, telogen effluvium, and endocrine-induced alope cia. Here, we aim to provide breast oncologists with a review of the types of hair loss related to cancer therapy and current preventative and treatment options to facilitate informative patient counseling. The Effect of the COVID-19 Pandemic on Stress-related Dermatologic Diseases
Acta Dermatovenerol Croat. 2022 Nov;30(3):157-162.ABSTRACTThe number and variety of patients admitted to hospitals have changed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. These changes have also affected dermatology clinics. The pandemic has had an adverse effect on the psychology of people by negatively affecting their quality of life. Patients who were admitted to the Bursa City Hospital Dermatology Clinic between July 15, 2020 and October 15, 2020 and from July 15, 2019 to October 15, 2019 were included in this study. The data of patients were gathered retrospectively by reviewing the electronic medical records and International Cla...

Alopecia Areata after COVID-19 Vaccines
We report 5 cases of AA after COVID-19 vaccination. The trend shown by patients in this study is an initial worsening after the first dose of the vaccine with the stability of the disease even with subsequent doses. However, it is worth highlighting the case reported by one of our patients who suffered a “booster effect” of the disease with progressive and worsening alopecia with each vaccine booster.Discussion: The possible mechanism of action lies in the ability of COVID-19 vaccines to induce spike protein, which can lead to molecular mimicry phenomena. In an organism predisposed to autoimmunity, the mRNA vaccine act...

Trichoscopic diagnosis of structural hair defects in a clinical setting: A Cross-sectional analytical study
Conclusion: Most hair shaft abnormalities can be reliably diagnosed with high accuracy using a handheld dermoscope in an office setting. Skillful knowledge of Dermoscopy is an important aid in diagnosis of hair and scalp disorders. (Source: Skin Pharmacology and Physiology)

IL-17 Expression in the Perifollicular Fibrosis in Biopsies From Lichen Planopilaris
Background: Lichen planopilaris (LPP) is a primary lymphocytic cicatricial alopecia for which therapy is often ineffective and there is no cure. Objectives: Looking for a new targetable molecule in the treatment of LPP, we sought to verify whether IL-17 expression is increased in scalp biopsies from patients with active scalp lesions of LPP. Methods: Horizontal sections of hematoxylin and eosin–stained slides from 40 scalp biopsies of active LPP were retrospectively collected and stained with the monoclonal antibody against IL-17 (Abcam, Cambridge, MA; ab79056, dilution 1:100). Twenty biopsies from pati...

160 Selected psychological stress and cognitive function parameters in patients suffering from COVID-19 induced telogen effluvium
Although the COVID-19 significantly induces mortality, many of the patients who recovered present other medical problems such as alopecias. Telogen effluvium (TE) is common alopecia that is usually related to events such as acute febrile diseases, including COVID-19. The purpose of the study was to evaluate selected psychological stress and cognitive function parameters in patients suffering from COVID-19 induced TE. The study included 32 Caucasian patients with COVID-19 induced TE and 32 patients who suffered from COVID-19 but did not develop TE. (Source: Journal of Investigative Dermatology)
