Am I still considered in-state for California?
I am from California, and I have lived there my whole life. My parents continue to live there. From 2016-2017, I lived in New York and worked as a teacher while also attending graduate school for a masters in education. Since I paid taxes in New York in 2017, will I be considered out of state for California schools? If I am considered out of state, it puts me in a terrible position because all my safety schools are in-state and none have them gotten back to me yet for interviews. Any... Diminished returns with attending salary?
It's no secret that the more highly reimbursed specialties are generally more competitive. However, even with loans and taxes factored in, a 200 k salary for primary care will provide you with a nice lifestyle. Would you be notably happier making 400 k compared to 200 k? What would you purchase with a 400k salary that a 200 k check wouldn't afford you? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

How do all these DOs in primary care make a living?
I'm talking about the DOs with student loans above 300k (most of them) and primary care salaries well under $170k (most of them). At my school, my total student loans will be $400,000, which by the end of residency, has compounded to $650,000. This means that, with a $150k salary (realistically), ill owe $60k/year in taxes and 65k in student loans, leaving $25k, which doesn't take into account malpractice insurance (which often exceeds $25k). These numbers aren't adding up. It seems to me... How do all these DOs in primary care make a living? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Solo VS Group Practice
I've worked group PP before and I have some opportunities to do that again. This is a side gig for me though, and when you're not seeing that many people, it really eats into your income to give up 40-60% of your income. My question is about the administrative side of things. What would I have to think about if I go solo? Obviously rent, etc, scheduling, billing....I'm mostly curious about billing and paying taxes since the office staff did that for me at the group practices. I imagine I'd... Opportunities in USA for Canadian AP-only pathologist
I am aware through the postings on this forum and through speaking with some of my American counterparts that the job situation in the USA is far less than ideal, but since our government in Canada is about to increase taxes to stratospheric levels I thought I'd ask anyway... What are the opportunities for an AP-only pathologist in the USA? In Canada most pathologists train in AP-only. From my readings it seems that not having CP is a huge problem for private groups. Can certain fellowships... Opportunities in USA for Canadian AP-only pathologist (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Mortgage consideration for new attending
For a fresh attending moving to San Diego (~300k in total student debt, no other debt with 3 kids)... does purchasing a home off the gate ( physician loan... etc) make sense? Looking at making around 300k gross for 7 on 7 off and working an extra shifts. Trying to pay the least amount of taxes, max out retirement 401k and such. Read around a bit but still new to all this. Thanks in advance (Source: Student Doctor Network)

are these taxes normal?
Last check had about 33% taxes on it!? Is this normal? I have negligible deductions (~20 for healthcare, no other insurances or 401k or anything). (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Married Interns - IDR and taxes
My wife and I just got married and will begin intern year in a couple of days. We are completing our W4s for the year and want to confirm what we think we know about this process and IDR that we've qualified for. Because we had $0 income for the last year, we decided to apply for REPAYE before we were legally married and were accepted allowing us to have a $0/mo for the next 12 months. This allows us to have 1/2 of our interest covered for at least the next 12 months. However, since we... Married Interns - IDR and taxes (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Establishing Florida residency
I'm nearing the last month or two of residency. I want to establish Florida residency. The plan is to work locums until I can find a position at non-HCA hospital within Miami, FL. Has anyone moved to Florida to establish residency and made it work to avoid paying state income taxes? New York City/New York State income taxes are ridiculously high. I pay 3.6% city tax alone. I believe I saw that I have to physically be in Florida at least 6 months and 1 day to qualify as a resident. Does... Establishing Florida residency (Source: Student Doctor Network)
