Orthodontics residency tuition
Hello, I am a Dentist going into Orthodontics, I will be starting residency July 2018. The residency is a tuition based residency, is the tuition tax deductible only the year that I am a resident? Or can I take loans out for the residency program and after graduation, write off the loan payments. I have 2 options: Option 1: Work while I am in residency, moonlighting and use the money from my job towards the tuition and write it off on my taxes that year. Option :2 Not work while I am in... Indenpedent contractor Vs employee status
hey all. I know this question has been asked multiple times. I've read what I could but some things don't apply to me. I've already signed a contract in ny as a hospital employee. Benefits aren't fantastic (no maternity leave or other shiny things I've heard usacs offers). I'm newly married and plan for no kids for at least two years. Location is far from the city so I don't have to worry about those crazy manhattan taxes. My concern is that I'm thinking of asking to change my contract to... Financial Decisions
Wanted to get some opinions on a few financial decisions toward the end of residency: 1. Any good strategies for asset / liability protection? (other than being nice to patients, not screwing up). It seems LLC/S corp does not provide any shelter. Any other strategies you guys are using? 2. For dual income- spouse making less now and will be making significantly less in attending life. Both of us with significant student loan debt (approx 100k each). File taxes separately or together?... Financial Decisions (Source: Student Doctor Network)

More fafsa questions
1. If my brother files his taxes as independent, can he still be part of my parents "household"? 2. If I use the IRS retrieval tool, it uses the data from 2016. However throughout 2017 my dad did not work because he lost his job so this data isn's that accurate. Will this info be updated once we file our 2017 taxes? 3. Does it matter whether or not I file my own taxes as independent? Will be more beneficial if I file as independent or not? I live with my parents but still help pay for bills... 1099 + W2 question
Hi all, quick question... I usually do my taxes via turbo tax cause it's cheap and easy, this year I have 1099 income from contract work, about ~ 20% of our total income between wife and I. My question, is turbo tax premier or business (whatever it is), easy to use? I don't want to spend big bucks on an accountant as that kinda defeats the purpose of my having set up the S-corp in the first place, and they all seem to charge a lot for things I find really stupid easy. I'm fairly... 1099 + W2 question (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Prescription heroin
Was listening to NPR on the way home today, interview of a journalist for vox who claims prescribing heroin TID on taxpayer dollars to curb the opioid epidemic has worked well on a small scale in one Vancouver clinic and advocated attempting this in the US. Sounded ridiculous hearing this but the online articles are there. Also had made multiple unsubstantiated statements such as placing patients on methadone or suboxone reduced the risk of death by more than 50% compared to other opiates.... Spinoff: Do you have an accountant?
Reading the property tax prepayment thread...how many of you have an accountant? Do your own taxes? If so, when did you decide the complexity of your finances required a CPA? Also related, if you do your own taxes, do you buy audit insurance via TurboTax or whatever software you use? First year out, and I’ve always done my own taxes, but the thought of an audit is simply horrifying, even for my simple taxes. (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Senate Tax plan - local property tax cap, pay early?
Hey all.... I've read several different things in different sources, however I'm reading in some places that the senate plan allows 10K deduction for either local property taxes or state taxes (if I'm interpreting below correctly). Assuming I would still plan on itemizing in 2018 despite 24K standard deduction and this becomes law, and I pay over 10K a year in property taxes, and I pay over 10K a year in state taxes.....pay my local property taxes for 2018 early (as in now in 2017) in order... Marriage effect on taxes while in school
I didn't see any prior posts about this specific section of the subject but if there are any I'd be happy to read! I have been with my boyfriend for 4 years and am heading to vet school in Fall 2018. We've been talking about getting married (we're basically engaged just not publicly) but I have no idea what the implications of that are on vet school and taxes in general. I'm fortunate enough that my parents will be providing the majority of my vet school tuition, although I would like to... Marriage effect on taxes while in school (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Pharmacist vs. Doctor
Compare the financial situation of a Pharmacist against a doctor with the following circumstances: the Pharmacist starts making $120k (after taxes) at age 24 and the doctor starts making $300k-$500k (before taxes and malpractice) at age 32-34. Compare them when they are both 45. Assume that they both bought a $800k house and two $20k cars. Who comes up on top, leaving aside other complexities? I think the pharmacist does. *Prays that this doesn't turn into a flame war* (Source: Student Doctor Network)

selling stock and affects on AGI
So I have a first world problem and want to see if any of the smart financial experts can help me. I have about 100k in a single company stock and I prefer to have the money in mutual funds. Cost basis is around 50k - so essentially for every 2 dollars I sell, I know I will owe capital gains taxes on $1 (15%). That I don't have a problem with, I know I will pay it eventually. My situation is that currently I max out Roth IRA's for my wife and I to the tune of 11k a year. Our adjusted... selling stock and affects on AGI (Source: Student Doctor Network)
