Loan repayment and taxes
I'm interviewing for jobs currently with for profit private physician groups and some of them offer a bonus to use for loan repayment in a significant amount. Is there any way that anyone knows of or that has used to be able to apply the amount directly to loans without it being taxed at the high rate that exists for bonuses? As in is there some way to negotiate this into a contract? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

1099 vs W2--costs to the employer
Are there costs to the employer for a 1099 over those of a W2? In my understanding, 1099 salary should be higher than W2 salary due to the employee covering additional taxes. However, a company in my area is offering a higher W2 salary than 1099. Is there some additional cost or inconvenience to the company in doing 1099? Just trying to make sense of it.... Legal Residence on AMCAS
I was wondering how I should go about claiming legal residence. I grew up in Michigan and did my undergrad there and then moved to Pennsylvania and lived there for 2 years (currently living there). I filed taxes in PA, so can I claim it to be my legal residence to give me a boost for PA schools? However, I do not want to lose my advantage on Michigan schools..would they look at where I spent my childhood and consider that as being in-state? Let me know if this doesn't make sense (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Why do programs sponsor candidates who won't stay in America after residency?
Real question. I am a US citizen IMG who struggled to match. After a few years of trying, I have decided to move on with my life. I know non-US IMGs who matched matched into US residency programs and went back to their country to practice medicine. Is there a reason why I worked, paid state and federal taxes, my parents work and pay taxes...and someone who won't even stay in this country after residency, gets paid by Medicare to be a resident? So the fact that I would have worked my tail... Why do programs sponsor candidates who won't stay in America after residency? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Mortgage/rent payment in Residency, especially intern year
I'll make this quick. I just matched at a program in Pittsburgh and will make 52k/year. My calculations tell me I will bring up (after taxes) $1350 bi-weekly. I will have a wife that will be UNABLE to work and we are assuming it will be for the entire first year +. I have looked at a number of places and it appears the average rent or mortgage payment will eat up a bi-weekly payment, so 1350 dollars. I am assuming my school loans will be around 300-350 dollars per month under the PAYE... Mortgage/rent payment in Residency, especially intern year (Source: Student Doctor Network)
