Zinc for prevention and treatment of the common cold
CONCLUSIONS: The findings suggest that zinc supplementation may have little or no effect on the prevention of colds but may reduce the duration of ongoing colds, with an increase in non-serious adverse events. Overall, there was wide variation in interventions (including concomitant therapy) and outcomes across the studies, as well as incomplete reporting of several domains, which should be considered when making conclusions about the efficacy of zinc for the common cold.PMID:38719213 | DOI:10.1002/14651858.CD014914.pub2 (Source: Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews)

The pattern of reproduction in the African giant pouched rat, Cricetomys gambianus, from Tanzania: unravelling the environmental triggers for breeding
Canadian Journal of Zoology, Ahead of Print. Our research represents the first extensive study of the breeding behaviour and related environmental triggers of reproduction in the African giant pouch rat (Cricetomys gambianus Waterhouse, 1840) in and around the equator throughout a whole year. We measured the gross morphology and detailed histology of both female and male rats, along with plasma steroid hormone levels. Contrary to other tropical-dwelling small mammals, the African giant pouch rat is a seasonal breeder; however, rainfall is not to be the primary cue of reproduction. Our study suggests that ambient temperatur...

Multilevel analysis of dropout from maternal continuum of care and its associated factors: Evidence from 2022 Tanzania Demographic and Health Survey
ConclusionThe dropout rate from the maternity CoC in Tanzania was high. The findings contribute to our understanding of the complex dynamics surrounding maternity care continuity and underscore the need for targeted interventions, considering factors such as marital status, socioeconomic status, internet usage, and geographical location. Bacterial aetiology, antimicrobial susceptibility patterns, and factors associated with urinary tract infection among under-five children at primary health facility, North-Western Tanzania
ConclusionOur study found a relatively high proportion of UTI among under-five children associated with vomiting, dysuria, abdominal pain, nappy use, and uncircumcision in males. The pathogens were least susceptible to (trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole, gentamycin, ampicillin, and penicillin) the commonly used antibiotic. We advocate a thorough clinical analysis to detect the predictors of UTI and a periodic review of empirical treatment of UTI based on the antibiotic susceptibility pattern. (Source: PLoS One)

Sirenomelia or mermaid syndrome with a cleft lip in a Tanzanian newborn: a case report
ConclusionSirenomelia is a rare congenital malformation with very poor prognosis. Specific interventions during pre-conception and early prenatal care are critical in the prevention of specific congenital anomalies. Early obstetric ultrasonography is invaluable for diagnosis of sirenomelia as well as counseling for possible termination of pregnancy. (Source: Journal of Medical Case Reports)

Cost analysis for initiating an integrated package of essential non-communicable disease interventions (PEN-Plus) in Kondoa District Hospital, Tanzania: a time-driven activity-based costing (TDABC) study protocol
This study aims to estimate the cost of initiating PEN-Plus for rheumatic heart disease, sickle cell disease and type 1 diabetes at Kondoa district hospital in Tanzania. Methods and analysis We will employ time-driven activity-based costing (TDABC) to quantify the capacity cost rates (CCR), and capital and recurrent costs associated with the implementation of PEN-Plus. Data on resource consumption will be collected through direct observations and interviews with nurses, the medical officer in charge and the heads of laboratory and pharmacy units/departments. Data on contact times for targeted NCDs will be collected by obs...

Bloomfield, Julian T Hertz BackgroundChronic myocardial injury is a condition defined by stably elevated cardiac biomarkers without acute myocardial ischemia. Although studies from high-income countries have reported that chronic myocardial injury predicts adverse prognosis, there are no published data about the condition in sub-Saharan Africa. MethodsBetween November 2020 and January 2023, adult patients with chest pain or shortness of breath were recruited fr...

'You are looked upon as a luxury tool': Young Tanzanian women's perception of community norms supporting partner violence during transactional sex ( < em > kudanga < /em > )
Cult Health Sex. 2024 Apr 26:1-16. doi: 10.1080/13691058.2024.2339280. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThis paper explores the definition of, and perceived community attitudes, toward kudanga, a Swahili street term for a type of transactional sex practised in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. Rooted in economic and gender disparity, transactional sex increases adolescent girls' and young women's vulnerability to HIV and gender-based violence. We sought to understand perceived community attitudes about kudanga, and how the internalisation of norms surrounding gender-based violence relate to the experiences of young women who practise ...
