Serengeti ’s ‘breathtaking’ mammal migration shaped by grazers’ diets
Related Reports Long-Term Modulation of Electrical Synapses in the Mammalian Thalamus BY Carole E. Landisman, Barry W. Connors Each April, some 200,000 zebras begin their journey 800 kilometers northward through the Serengeti in Tanzania and into Kenya. About 1.3 million wildebeests join the throng, and after nearly 1 month come 400,000 Thomson’s gazelles. The procession is “breathtaking,” says T. Michael Anderson, a savanna ecologi...

Birth asphyxia and its association with grand multiparity and referral among hospital births: A prospective cross ‐sectional study in Benin, Malawi, Tanzania and Uganda
ConclusionsThere is some evidence of an increased risk of birth asphyxia for grand multiparous women having babies at hospitals, especially following intrapartum referral. Antenatal counseling should recognize grand multiparity as higher risk and advise appropriate childbirth facilities. Findings in Malawi suggest an advantage of health systems configuration requiring further exploration. (Source: Acta Obstetricia et Gynecologica Scandinavica)

Epidemiology and treatment outcomes of recurrent tuberculosis in Tanzania from 2018 to 2021 using the National TB dataset
This study aimed to assess the epidemiology of recurrent TB in Tanzania; specifically, we aim to determine the prevalence of TB recurrence and factors associated with unfavourable treatment outcomes among patients with recurrent TB in Tanzania from 2018 to 2021. MethodsIn this cross-sectional study, we utilized Tanzania ’s routinely collected national TB program data. The study involved a cohort of TB patients over a fixed treatment period registered in the TB and Leprosy case-based District Health Information System (DHIS2-ETL) database from 2018 to 2021 in Tanzania. We included patients’ sociodemographic and clinical...

Identifying neonates at risk for post-discharge mortality in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, and Monrovia, Liberia: Derivation and internal validation of a novel risk assessment tool
Conclusions A small number of factors predicted all-cause, 60-day mortality after discharge from neonatal wards in Tanzania and Liberia. After external validation, this risk assessment tool may facilitate clinical decision making for eligibility for discharge and the direction of resources to follow-up high risk neonates. Azithromycin for Prevention of Mortality in African Children
Mass administration of oral azithromycin is central to the World Health Organization (WHO) campaign to eliminate trachoma. Mass administration of azithromycin could have beneficial effects in young children due to its activity against pathogens causing pneumonia, diarrhea, and malaria, but could also have harmful effects, including generation of antimicrobial resistance. In 2009, a cluster randomized clinical trial showed that mass administration of oral azithromycin was associated with a 49% reduction in mortality in Ethiopian children aged 1 to 9 years. The subsequent Macrolides Oraux pour R éduire les Décès avec un O...

Rudi Kundini, Pamoja Kundini (RKPK): study protocol for a hybrid type 1 randomized effectiveness-implementation trial using data science and economic incentive strategies to strengthen the continuity of care among people living with HIV in Tanzania
Economic incentives can improve clinical outcomes among in-care people living with HIV (PLHIV), but evidence is limited for their effectiveness among out-of-care PLHIV or those at risk of disengagement. We pro... (Source: Trials)

Long-term retention on antiretroviral treatment after enrolment in prevention of vertical HIV transmission services: a prospective cohort study in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania
CONCLUSIONS: ART attrition among women with HIV remains highest in the first year of enrolment in vertical transmission prevention services and declines markedly following a transition to chronic HIV care. Targeted interventions to improve ART continuity among women with HIV during and beyond prevention of vertical transmission are vital to ending paediatric HIV and keeping women and children alive and healthy.PMID:38332522 | PMC:PMC10853596 | DOI:10.1002/jia2.26186 (Source: Journal of the International AIDS Society)
