Questioning risk compensation: pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) and sexually transmitted infections among men who have sex with men, capital region of Denmark, 2019 to 2022
ConclusionWe found a 35% increase in STI incidence associated with PrEP use. It started before PrEP initiation, challenging the assumption that PrEP leads to risk compensation. Instead, the data suggest that individuals seek PrEP during periods of heightened sexual risk-taking. Consequently, PrEP programmes should include sexual health consultations, STI testing, treatment and prevention strategies to prevent HIV and improve sexual health.PMID:38551099 | PMC:PMC10979528 | DOI:10.2807/1560-7917.ES.2024.29.13.2300451 (Source: Euro Surveill)

Ceftriaxone-Resistant Gonorrhea - China, 2022
MMWR Morb Mortal Wkly Rep. 2024 Mar 28;73(12):255-259. doi: 10.15585/mmwr.mm7312a2.ABSTRACTGonorrhea is a widespread sexually transmitted infection; in 2022, China reported 96,313 cases of gonorrhea, making it the fourth most common notifiable infectious disease in the country after viral hepatitis, pulmonary tuberculosis, and syphilis. The rise in prevalence in antimicrobial-resistant strains, particularly the international spread of ceftriaxone-resistant clones, poses a formidable challenge to gonorrhea control. The China Gonococcal Resistance Surveillance Program (China-GRSP), established in 1987 and covering 19 of 34 p...

Clinicopathologic assessment of secondary syphilis avoids misdiagnosis: results of comprehensive evaluation of 114 cases
CONCLUSIONS: In this study plasma cells from superficial and deep perivascular distribution to nodular infiltration were a crucial clue for diagnosis of secondary syphilis.PMID:38533366 | PMC:PMC10962382 | DOI:10.5114/ada.2023.135755 (Source: Advances in Dermatology and Allergology)

Don't Overlook Syphilis: An Atypical Rash in a Woman With Neurologic, Ocular, and Otic Involvement
We present a case of a 20-year-old immunocompetent heterosexual woman who presented with a rash atypical for secondary syphilis and accompanied by neurologic, ocular, and otic manifestations. This case highlights the importance of considering syphilis in the differential diagnosis of sexually active patients with a rash, even when their clinical presentations do not align with the textbook description of a syphilitic rash. Health care providers must remain vigilant for the diagnosis of syphilis in diverse clinical contexts, as early recognition and treatment are vital to prevent further syphilitic complications and transmi...
