Could late-latent syphilis be treated with a single subcutaneous infusion of long-acting penicillin?
We present a novel method of delivering the same penicillin treatment into the fat, which obviate the need for multiple doses and is associated with less reported pain – a potential gamechanger to improve syphilis treatment adherence and care cascade. (Source: Sexual Health)

Characterisation of social media conversations on syphilis: an unobtrusive observational study
This study used data sourced from Twitter to characterise social media conversations about syphilis. Accurate medical information was limited, whereas tweets about personal experience generated the most engagement. Coupling medical resources and personal experiences may support public health education on social media. (Source: Sexual Health)

It's not all about flagella - sticky invasion by pathogenic spirochetes
Trends Parasitol. 2024 Mar 23:S1471-4922(24)00071-0. doi: 10.1016/j.pt.2024.03.004. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPathogenic spirochetes cause a range of serious human diseases such as Lyme disease (LD), syphilis, leptospirosis, relapsing fever (RF), and periodontal disease. Motility is a critical virulence factor for spirochetes. From the mechanical perspective of the infection, it has been widely believed that flagella are the sole key players governing the migration and dissemination of these pathogens in the host. Here, we highlight the important contribution of spirochetal surface-exposed adhesive molecules and their ...

Communicable Disease Screening and Human Immunodeficiency Virus Prevention in the Emergency Department
Emergency departments (ED) provide care to populations with high rates of communicable diseases, like HIV, hepatitis C virus, and syphilis. For many patients, the ED is their sole entry point into the healthcare system and they do not routinely access screening and prevention services elsewhere. As such, the ED can serve an important public health role through communicable disease identification, treatment, and prevention. In this article, we examine national recommendations, peer-reviewed literature, and expert consensus to provide cutting edge strategies for implementing communicable infectious disease screening and prev...

Prevalence, Trends and Correlates of HIV, Syphilis and HCV Infection Among Chinese Local and Cross-border Migrant Female Sex Workers in the Sino-Vietnam Border Area of Guangxi, 2016 –2021
AbstractFemale sex workers (FSWs) are considered a high-risk group for sexually transmitted infections (STIs). However, limited data exist on the prevalence and trends of HIV, syphilis and HCV among FSWs in the Sino-Vietnam border area. To determine the prevalence, trends and correlates of STIs among Chinese local FSWs (CL-FSWs) and cross-border migrant FSWs (CM-FSWs), we conducted consecutive cross-sectional surveys from 2016 to 2021, recruiting 7747 CL-FSWs and 932 CM-FSWs. The overall HIV, syphilis and HCV prevalence declined from 1.0%, 8.8% and 1.7% to 0.1%, 0.9% and 0.3%, respectively. There was no significant downwar...
