High school sports coverage
Hey, current PGY-1 with Family Med. For those that have done sports coverage as a resident, how did that typically work? We have a local high school very willing to have us provide coverage (myself and a couple of others in my program interested in SM), but we aren't sure if we have to A.) get approval from our program, B.) have an attending technically to "back us up" in theory. Or, can we just start showing up to games and helping out? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Classifying Psychiatric Illness
Hi all, Random musings of a soon-to-be graduating resident. I'm wondering what everyone's thoughts are on disease classification and nosology. Obviously, there is great (patient and Pharma) demand for new therapies for "existing" illnesses as defined in DSM-5, and a lot of financial and academic work turns on these therapies being investigated and clinically used. But the cynical part of me thinks, "psilocybin and ketamine and Zuranolone and Trintellix augmented with Caplyta and exercise... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Specialty Help: Heart telling me 1 thing, Wallet telling me another
Hey everyone, another confused MS3 getting close to needing to schedule my 4th year and im torn between a couple (few?) specialties and really need to decide. Mostly I am in between FM (sports medicine) and anesthesia, with PM&r a maybe still there as a third. Go to a low-tier MD in midwest, interested in moving back west to AZ, TX, NM somewhere around there. Step 1 of 243, no red flags, honored all clerkships so far (just 2 left, expecting ill honor at least 1 more of them), 1 first author... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Cryo and other blood products in the same line
I've been told not to put cryo in the Belmont for fear of clots forming and necessitating replacement of the tubing. Do you exercise the same caution when it comes to running product through standard blood tubing? I was in a case where someone got on me for hanging platelets right after I hung cryo without first flushing in the cryo with crystalloid. Was trying to avoid giving extra crystalloid when I knew I was just going to be giving more product. I feel like I've done this a few times... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Introduction to the SDN Pre-medical community
(Note: I posted this in the Nontraditional forum but decided to cross-post here because it is naturally much more active.) Good evening, fellow pre-meds! Selfishly, I thought it might be a good exercise - perhaps even cathartic - to write out my (very preliminary, exploratory, non-committal) plans. For some context, a little about me: 35+ year old male, married, young children under four. Sole breadwinner - work in sales (own a small business with 2 employees who are in support... butrans vs nucynta
What medical criteria do you all use for for prescribing butrans vs Nucynta? For this exercise lets compared butrans to nucynta ER as insurance seems to favor ER over IR, and the ER is a better comparison to butrans as they both provide long term coverage. And how often do you switch between them? meaning for patients that need around the clock coverage, but don't respond to one or the other, initially. Both are clearly safer long term than standard opioids, which most of us avoid when... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

How do I know if PT is actually not the right fit for me?
I always had a little bit of doubt. I feel like I have just been sticking to it because I was scared to change my mind and wasn't really sure what else to do and already geared all of undergrad towards DPT. Lots of regret not just pausing and exploring other careers. I'm now a 1st year, in my 3rd semester. I can't seem to pull together any motivation to continue. All this work, stress and debt just doesn't feel worth it. I'm a lecture away from just switching to exercise physiology or... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Do I need to take step 2?
Do I need to take USMLE step 2? Looking to see if I need to take step 2 for residency. If I decided to do sports med one day, would not having a step 2 hurt me since it’s importance is increasing and will continue to in the coming years. Step 1: 250 Level 1: 652 Interested in FM residency programs in the South East: ETSU, MAHEC, etc. Thank you for any advice! (Source: Student Doctor Network)

I am a junior student in Engineering major at service academy. I have excellent GPA and MCAT results and all required extracurricular work for top-tier medical school. Podiatry school at 52?
I'm posting this on behalf of someone close to me, who isn't too tech savvy. They were initially pre-PA, but decided they want to pursue a higher level degree. cGPA and sGPA: 3.99 (~100 units; has a bachelor's and masters from Asia) MCAT: 496 Clinical: volunteered for an internist for ~300 hours, who did a lot of sports med treatments involving feet, and actually led them to discover podiatry as a field and wanted to pursue it. Also has some hospice volunteering ~50 hours. Non-Clinical... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)
