In Job Interviews, Look for the Question Behind the Question
Job interview questions. They can cause a whole host of feelings, including anxiety, stress, consternation, and a big old boatload of worry. What questions can I expect? What scenarios might they ask me to describe? How can I address what they ' re truly looking for? How will I know what to say?Whenever an interviewer asks a question, you can be certain they ' re asking that question for a reason. Questions aren ' t asked willy nilly — each one has a purpose, and the main purpose is to learn more about you and ascertain if you ' re going to be a solid return on their investment. Let ' s face it: the cost of RN empl...

Meet the Editors: John Coverdale, MD, MEd
What are your roles and responsibilities with Academic Medicine? I am blessed to have the role of associate editor. It is a challenging one. Most of my work is judging articles for their suitability of publication, which is a several hour per week commitment. Another responsibility is to shape the direction of Academic Medicine in small ways by contributing to decisions on what gets published, by occasional editorial writing which directs attention to what is important, and by closely collaborating with my wonderful editor colleagues.  What do you enjoy most about your work with Academic Medicine? I enjoy rea...

Hey Nurse, Got Resistance?
Have you ever found yourself resisting change? Has your nursing career stalled because you ' re afraid of taking a risk or doing something different? Change is indeed the only constant in the universe (aside from death and taxes), so it ' s something that we simply need to get comfortable with, over and over again.Magical ThinkingMany nurses and non-nurses alike can engage in magical thinking at various times throughout their careers. "Oh, I don ' t need a BSN; they ' ll never close the doors on associate degree nurses. " Or maybe something like this: "I think I ' ll become a nurse entrepreneur. I ' ll just tell people I h...

Rehab Fails: What goes wrong in rehab 4
It’s not hard to choose rehab fails, the problem is more about when to stop! I tell a lie, it’s more about how to make changes so these things don’t happen. Today’s #rehabfail is all about attempting to carve bits of a person off so each profession gets “their” bit to do with what they will. Oh boy, this is a doozy, and it comes to me off the back of seeing the return of the age-old argument about whether pain is “all about the bio” or whether the person gets a look-in. Cuz if it’s all bio then we just treat that bio and be done with it, right? It’s a question ...

When you feel overwhelmed, when you’ve just had a setback or you're simply tired then one helpful way to go about things to be able to keep moving forward is to take it one day at a time. Why I Love To Think in Terms of Frames
This week a couple of people asked me about frames and reframing and how I got into using this particular approach to personal development, so I thought I’d share a quick piece about this. Our courses in particular includes lots and lots of different frames for solving practical problems in many areas of life. What Is a Frame? A frame is a way of representing a problem or situation. With respect to self-development, a frame typically assigns meaning to events. I think you’ll ready understand this with a simple example. Suppose someone says: My wife cheated on me. The word “cheated” is...

Welcome Back Kotter: New York ’ s next 1115 Waiver
The objectives of DSRIP 1.0 – a laundry list of HEDIS measures – made the program difficult to manage “on the ground” and too tightly tied to medical measures of success. Too many choices.  PPS were given choices about which projects they would work on – and by extension – which projects would be funded and measured. The projects were tactically expressed – and therefore too prescriptive – not just defining goals to be achieved – but presuming that DOH knew how goals would best be achieved.  In many cases – this mismatch between what to do and how it would be done was...

Surround Sound Intentions
In November I did a 30-day challenge regarding ideation, sharing progress updates in the CGC forums as I went along. My version of the challenge was to generate 100+ divergent ideas per day for each day of November. My intention was to stimulate some thinking in new directions. Most of the ideas I generated weren’t useful. However, some notable ideas did lead to interesting results, as I shared in CGC along the way. One I’ll share here is that I ended up diving into the rabbit hole of figuring out how to set up a decent home theater system, which is a project I’ve wanted to do for a while but always found ...

Making first contact: what to do with all that information! Part 3
In my last post I described the “4 P” model (sometimes called the 5P!) of formulation for pain. In today’s post I want to talk about an integrated approach for a team. Teamwork in pain management is an enormous thing – IASP (International Association for the Study of Pain) endorses multidisciplinary (I prefer interprofessional) teamwork but gives little information on how teams best work together. In fact, research exploring teamwork processes in pain management is remarkably absent, even though there’s considerable research elsewhere in healthcare showing that effective teamwork is quite ...

The Nurse Warrior: Fighting the Good Fight
Nurses, the hard-working lifeblood and connective tissue of the healthcare system, can often feel as if they are doing battle with elemental forces far beyond their control in their efforts to provide optimal patient care and fulfill their personal and professional mission. While nursing can often feel absolutelyquixotic or Sisyphean in nature, nurses battle on. Whether it ' s the Covid-19 pandemic, a natural disaster, the opioid epidemic, a mass shooting, or the challenges faced by the homeless, nurses the world over continue to fight the good fight no matter the odds. It is here that the archetype of the Nurse Warrio...

Are Social Media Companies Common Carriers?
Matthew FeeneyDuring Donald Trump ’s presidency, many Republican lawmakers and conservative activists took steps to address perceived anti‐conservative bias in “Big Tech.” The most prominent of these efforts fit into two categories: proposed amendments to Section 230 and executive branch action. More recently, legal schol ars, policy analysts, and one Supreme Court justice have considered a third option—common carriage regulation—as a means to force prominent social media companies to host more speech. Such an approach would require these social media companies to treat all legal content equally and refrai...

Ten Self Love Tips for the ‘New Normal’
When I married myself five years ago, it was to celebrate self love - to stop chasing the 'happily ever after' and start living the 'happily ever now'. Since then, I've no longer felt the need to apologise for my single status and have found being a sologamist very empowering. I really enjoy my own company and find peace in solitude. So, last year, when the Coronavirus struck, I thought I'd cope with a solo lockdown ok, after all, I'm no stranger to filling my own cup! However, it didn't take long before I found myself plunging into despair. The months of isolation stretching ahead of me felt insurmountable and I starte...
