Learning with AI Language Models: Guidelines for the Development and Scoring of Medical Questions for Higher Education
This article explores the use of AI language models in biomedical education, focusing on their application in both classroom teaching and learning assignments. Using the SOLO taxonomy as a framework, I discuss strategies for designing questions that challenge students to exercise critical thinking and problem-solving skills, even when assisted by AI models. Additionally, I propose a scoring rubric for evaluating student performance when collaborating with AI language models, ensuring a comprehensive assessment of their learning outcomes.AI language models offer a promising opportunity for enhancing student engagement and p...

Comparing GPs according to their model of practice: are multiprofessional group practices associated with more favourable working conditions?
AbstractIn the generalized context of general practitioner shortages and transitions towards team-based primary care, we investigated how the different practising models relate to general practitioners ’ labour supply. More precisely, we analysed the association between practice models—solo, groups of general practitioners, and multiprofessional groups—and their reported labour supply and level of satisfaction with work-life balance. We used a French cross-sectional survey from 2018 that sur veyed a representative national sample of 3,032 self-employed general practitioners about their working conditions. We found th...

Exposure of honey bees to mixtures of microbial biopesticides and their effects on bee survival under laboratory conditions
Environ Sci Pollut Res Int. 2024 Mar 7. doi: 10.1007/s11356-024-32753-9. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTBiopesticides, having as active ingredients viruses, bacteria, or fungi, are developed to substitute or reduce the use of chemical plant protection products in different agrosystems. Though the application of mixtures containing several products is a common practice, interactions between microbial biopesticides and related effects on bees as non-target organisms have not been studied yet. In the current study, we exposed winter bees to five different microbial-based products and their combinations at the maximum recommend...

Cooling Research Fever in Dermatology —The Role of Community Service
To the Editor We read with interest the recent Viewpoint by Gandelman et al that highlighted research fever in dermatology, which refers to the field ’s growing overemphasis on research output and the concurrent rise in the average number of abstracts, presentations, and publications of applicants matched into dermatology. We agree with the authors that research fever is a complex, multifactorial problem for which there may not be a simple, sin gular quick fix. However, one solution mentioned in mere passing, but which we believe deserves greater consideration and emphasis, is increasing the importance of community servi...

‘Ethics is not a checkbox exercise.’ Bioinformatician Yves Moreau reacts to mass retraction of papers from China
Last week, bioinformatician Yves Moreau of KU Leuven scored an important victory: The journal Molecular Genetics & Genomic Medicine retracted 18 papers from Chinese institutions because of ethical concerns. Moreau has long waged a solo campaign against studies that fail to get proper free and informed consent when collecting genetic samples, especially from vulnerable populations in China. He had raised questions about the now-retracted papers in 2021 and says this appears to be the largest set of retractions ever over human rights issues. Identical retraction notices for the papers, posted on...

Analysis of Gaze, Head Orientation, and Joint Attention in Autism With Triadic VR Interviews
This study aims to support the situational solo practice of gaze behavior and head orientation using a triadic (three-way) virtual reality (VR) job interview simulation. The system lets users encounter common interview questions and see how they share attention among the interviewers based on their conversational role (speaking or listening). Given the yaw and position readings of the VR headset, we use a machine learning-based approach to analyze head orientations relative to the interviewers in the virtual environment, and achieve low angular error in a low complexity way. We examine the degree to which interviewer backc...

Patterns of opioid use among Texas dental practitioners during the COVID-19 pandemic
CONCLUSIONS: Further research is warranted to assess post-pandemic opioid prescribing patterns, and additional educational strategies regarding limitations of opioid prescriptions should be applied to general, rather than specialty, dental practitioners.PMID:38189194 | DOI:10.5055/jom.0837 (Source: Journal of Opioid Management)
