Jury Duty
As a solo practitioner summoned for jury duty, have others faced this? Can a judge require service despite a full clinic schedule? If urgent patient care arises, is temporary release from duty possible? Should I book and then cancel the clinic if selected, or preemptively cancel anticipating jury service? Is deferral for arranging a locum tenens common? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Solo Private Practice Folks: How do you handle coverage?
A work friend and I both have been thinking more about transitioning from a large organization to private practice. One of the things I get hung up on is coverage. With a W2 in a large organization, I punch in at 8 and punch out at 4 with no worries about getting called on nights/weekends. How does this work in a solo private practice? My colleague was thinking that it's sufficient to use the crisis line or present to the ED outside of clinical hours and for the psychiatrist to return... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Solo private practice
Hey guys, long-time lurker here in my mid-40s. I've been a solo employed general ENT in a small town for several years. I'm extremely busy, with very strong reputation and referral base, but hospital administrators are making conditions toxic and unsustainable. I'm planning on leaving but need to figure out my next steps. I'd like to run my options by you and get some opinions. Option 1: open my own private practice in the same small town as long as I can get my non-compete waived. I... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Cash Flow Disruption due to Change/United Health Cyber-Attack

Solo dermpath - total # of biopsies per year?
Generally speaking, how many biopsies per year are necessary to keep a private practice solo dermpath busy? For example, if a solo dermpath wanted to do path 3 full days a week, how many biopsies would a private practice derm group need to provide for that type of work? I guess another important question is, on average about how many cases does a PP dermpath typically do per day? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Solo practice out of residency?
Hello, Current PGY-4 and trying to decide what to do after training. I am leaning towards going into private practice and I'm contemplating starting my own practice vs. joining another practice. Although the idea of going out on my own is scary and does entail some risk (taking out a loan to start a practice vs. stepping into a high paying job) I really like the idea of having my own business and being the primary decision maker. However, some have suggested to me that it would be better... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

What is the deal with podiatry?
I shadowed in podiatry and I loved it, I can see myself practicing podiatry for the rest of my life. I would love to own a solo PP. The podiatrists I shadowed are happy, have families, and they make good money. But then I go on here and it everyone acts like it is the worst career choice possible. I'm going to apply to podiatry school now, with the intent to go into private practice when I graduate. This is obviously a field for private practice and I can't understand why people would even... Building Practice in MSG/Hospital Setting
Wanted to get everyone's opinion on this. I just started in a hospital/MSG based orthopedic clinic with no other foot and ankle here. Do you treat it similar to how you would as a solo or PP provider? The business development team is supposed to help market me, just wanted to get opinions on things I may not think of, and they may not regularly do to market. (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Vacation coverage in private practice
What do y'all do in terms of vacation coverage if you are in solo private practice? I'm starting a small private practice in addition to my main academic gig. I have no current plans to go on a long vacation where I would want to be completely disconnected but I'm sure that will come up eventually in the future. (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Size of Medical Office Space
I'm looking to start a solo practice and trying to plan for office space needs. In general I would like 4 exam rooms (~110 sq.ft/room) and let's say a 15x15 procedure suite. Other rooms to account for would include 2 bathrooms (patient, staff), Reception/Waiting area, Kitchenette/break room, one physician office. How much square footage do you think would be required? Appreciate any recommendations. (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Is independent practice a viable option in radiology?
I know IR has opportunity for solo or small group OBL work, just wondering if this is also possible for DR? I imagine breast would be most conducive but unsure if equipment cost is too high to run a solo breast clinic. (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Medicaid insurance and new solo private practice
Hello! I am in the process of opening a solo psychiatric practice this summer and currently getting credentialed with some of the commercial insurers and Medicare. During this credentialing process, a blue cross blue shield agent said, "If you choose not to accept Medicaid Managed Care members, this would be for all health plans, not just for BC/BS. NYS doesn’t allow for providers to pick and choose what MMC policy they can and cannot accept, as it is all or nothing." To my... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Solo private practice straight out of residency
Hello all, Long time lurker here, since the pre-pod school days. I'm going into PGY-3 and have been thinking about the real world post residency for about 6 months now. I've seen lots of good advice on here, and the majority of yall seem to think practice ownership is the best route to take, as far as private practice goes, rather than becoming an associate. This really clicks with me, as the primary reason I decided to become a physician and go into podiatry was to ultimately be my own... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Safety/panic buttons in solo private practice?
Starting a small cash-pay private practice, seeing pts both virtually and in-person. I'm renting an office two days a week, located in a fancy high-rise building in a very urban HCOL town. In residency (where I saw mostly medicaid) and in some county clinics/hospitals I've worked out, I had either panic buttons in the office I worked in, or carried around a panic button thing (inpatient). I know I'll be seeing a different clientele in my private practice, but it still makes me a little... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)
