A doctor ’s life is absurd, but can it still be worth living?
I will speak for myself to say that I completely identified with, and fully agree with, all the sentiments shared by Dr. Klingberg in “A breakup with primary care.” Still, from my own life experiences, and a 30-year career in primary care solo practice, I have been forced to believe that these sentiments are ultimately […]Find jobs at  Careers by KevinMD.com.  Search thousands of physician, PA, NP, and CRNA jobs now.  Learn more. Be the Man
In January 2020, just as there were concerns being raised about an emerging viral pandemic that would ultimately shred so many lives, we, The Tyrannochorus choir, were rehearsing hard for a couple of big concerts we had been planning for months. They were the “Love Concerts”. Songs about love and faith in humanity. Ultimately, we raised several thousand pounds for a couple of major charities with the pair of events. Anyway, I was in my usual bass/baritone sometimes tenor slot for most of the songs we would sing but was accompanying on guitar on one tune and singing the lead solo on The Young ‘uns song Be ...

Sonnet 1 by Bradley Davespeare
We’ve been tasked this week by our maestro Tim Lihoreau to come up with a sonnet for the Tyrannochorus weekly ZoomChoir. I don’t think I’ve written this type of poem since English lessons at school. It felt like too much of a challenge but I read a couple from The Bard and I think I’ve got their measure (yeah, right!). So my first public sonnet laments the lack of live music any of us can rehearse or perform right now and also, perhaps, the notion of problems one might experience with one’s sense of hearing having been involved with relatively loud live music for years and years… Anyway,...

How Pixar ’s “Soul” met the Science of Awe
Five years ago, I (Dacher) received a call from Pixar writer and director Pete Docter to talk about his new film. The last time I said yes to such a request, I served as a scientific consultant for his film Inside Out. So, I was intrigued. Before my visit, Pete offered a brief sketch of the film. The main character, Joe, is a middle-aged jazz pianist in a rut as a middle school band teacher in Queens. Just before his breakthrough show with a famous quartet, he falls into a manhole and dies, entering into another realm of consciousness. There he encounters “The Great Beyond”—but escapes to a pre-life realm, the “Gre...

The 5 Major Transformations Creative People Want
Here’s an update on the new Amplify course on creative productivity that will be launching by the end of the month. I figured out the major transformations we’ll be working on together, so in this post I’ll share those with you. First off, I appreciate all the generous feedback that people sent in response to the February 3rd email to my email list. I asked about people’s creative struggles, dreams, and desires regarding their creative flow, and the responses were super insightful. I actually cried a few times while reading some of the emails. I felt honored by the authenticity and depth that ...

Your Relationship With Text Messaging
How would you rate your current relationship with texting on a scale of 1 to 10? A 1 means you really need to improve how you use this tool. I feel that I have a healthy relationship with text messaging. It’s generally not a distraction, I use it effectively, and my approach works well for me. Boundary issues are uncommon and easily fixed. So let me share some tips regarding how I use it. See if any of this helps you reassess your own relationship with texting. ...

Why this plastic surgeon closed his practice to become a high school science teacher
Imagine turning off your pager forever. If you are a solo-practitioner on call 24 hours a day, I suspect this thought has crossed your mind. Coordinating time off for vacation, being constantly interrupted at your children’s recital or athletic event, and even making it home to prepare dinner represent common challenges in this setting. A […]Find jobs at  Careers by KevinMD.com.  Search thousands of physician, PA, NP, and CRNA jobs now.  Learn more. (Source: Kevin, M.D. - Medical Weblog)

Thanksgiving came early this year. I just didn ’t appreciate it.
I retired on June 30, 2020, after 32 years of solo practice as a dermatologist. Due to the pandemic, some say I was smart to retire when I did. But if I was so smart, I would have retired on February 28th. My practice was simple: three full-time employees, 1,300 square feet, no fancy surgeries […]Find jobs at  Careers by KevinMD.com.  Search thousands of physician, PA, NP, and CRNA jobs now.  Learn more. COVID-19: Misaligned Priorities and Missed Opportunities
(Note: this blog post wasoriginally published on LinkedIn.) In the midst of the coronavirus pandemic, information and misinformation travel like wildfire. Meanwhile, as we individually and collectively struggle with aligning our priorities and making good choices, things get overlooked and left in the dust, including people.Missteps have been the hallmark of the pandemic here in the United States, especially when it comes to the Trump administration ' s lackluster and criminally misguided response, denial of reality, rejection of science, and the consistent undermining of expertise. No matter the administration in powe...

NaNoWriMo – Day 1
I did my first day of NaNoWriMo yesterday, writing the first 1696 words of a new novel – basically one full scene from start to finish. It took an hour with a 10-min break in the middle, so it was 50 minutes of writing time. And oh it’s bad – so hideously bad – but it’s a start. It introduces a couple of characters, including the protagonist, sets up the theme, and has a bunch of dialog, but as far as fiction writing goes, it needs a lot of work. I made some editing notes too, just to jot down some changes and improvements that popped into my mind along the way. I put those in a different section of the doc...

Banishing the Organizational Shadow in Healthcare
Carl Jung once identified the shadow (or shadow archteype) as the unconscious aspect of the personality that the conscious mind and ego don ' t especially care to recognize as an aspect of the self. Some may refer to the shadow as the entirety of the unconscious mind. In this light, can we also deduce that organizations themselves also have a shadow? The Shadow Lurks Jung stated, “Everyone carries a shadow, and the less it is embodied in the individual ’s conscious life, the blacker and denser it is. ” He also said, “One does not become enlightened by imaging figures of light, but my making the darkness c...

Sciencebase in the time of Covid
Up front: Nothing much has changed for my working practices since the coronavirus pandemic struck and we were all put into varying degrees of lockdown and social distancing. I’ve carried on with regular clients covering science news across a wide range of disciplines for the outlets that have all been mentioned here on numerous occasions over the last 25 years of this website… As a household, we never did run out of loo roll nor any other essentials despite not stockpiling nor panic buying… Lockdown did mean more “at home” time, no choir nor band rehearsals, only in-the-house solo music creati...
