Insight into chemically reactive metabolites of aliphatic amine pollutants: A de novo prediction strategy and case study of sertraline
Environ Int. 2024 Apr 5;186:108636. doi: 10.1016/j.envint.2024.108636. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe uncommon metabolic pathways of organic pollutants are easily overlooked, potentially leading to idiosyncratic toxicity. Prediction of their biotransformation associated with the toxic effects is the very purpose that this work focuses, to develop a de novo method to mechanistically predict the reactive toxicity pathways of uncommon metabolites from start aliphatic amine molecules, which employed sertraline triggered by CYP450 enzymes as a model system, as there are growing concerns about the effects on human health pose...

Chinese herbal medicines for the treatment of depression: a systematic review and network meta-analysis
Conclusion: Our findings elucidate the promising therapeutic potential of Chinese herbal medicines as viable alternatives in the treatment of depression, with certain herbs demonstrating enhanced efficacy and safety profiles. The outcomes of this study advocate for the integration of these alternative modalities into contemporary depression management paradigms. However, it underscores the necessity for larger, methodologically robust trials to further validate and refine these preliminary findings.Systematic review registration:https://www.crd.york.ac.uk/PROSPERO/, identifier CRD42023452109. Lavender oil preparation Silexan is effective in mild-to-moderate major depression: a randomized, placebo- and reference-controlled trial
Eur Arch Psychiatry Clin Neurosci. 2024 Apr 1. doi: 10.1007/s00406-024-01783-2. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAnxiety and depressive disorders have overlapping symptoms and share common neurobiological pathways. Antidepressant drugs have been demonstrated to be efficacious in anxiety as well. Vice versa, it may also be promising to investigate the efficacy of anxiolytic drugs such as silexan in major depressive disorder (MDD). Patients with a mild or moderate, single or recurrent episode of MDD and a total score of 19-34 points on the Montgomery Åsberg Depression Rating Scale (MADRS) were randomized to receive 1 × 80 mg/...

Comparing the effect of fluoxetine, escitalopram, and sertraline, on the level of BDNF and depression in preclinical and clinical studies: a systematic review
In conclusion, it seems that SSRIs are reliable antidepressants, and the improvement effect of SSRIs on depression is not dependent to BDNF level (at least in human studies). (Source: European Journal of Clinical Pharmacology)

Exposure to psychotropic drugs and breast cancer risk in patients with bipolar disorder and major depressive disorder: a nested case-control study
This study aimed to assess such risk among women with major depressive disorder (MDD) and bipolar disorder (BD). A nested case-control study design was used with data obtained from the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database. Logistic regression analysis with adjustments for demographic characteristics, medical and mental comorbidities, and all-cause clinical visits was performed to estimate the risk of breast cancer according to the cumulative defined daily dose (cDDD) of psychotropic drugs. The study included 1564 women with MDD or BD who had breast cancer, and 15,540 women with MDD or BD who did not have brea...
