Intense fluorodeoxyglucose uptake by a benign sclerosing stromal tumor of the ovary
We present the case of a benign sclerosing stromal tumor (SST) of the ovary, which showed intense fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) uptake in a solid component of the tumor on positron emission tomography –computed tomography (PET–CT). A solid component of this tumor also showed strong enhancement and high intensity on contrast-enhanced and diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging, respectively. To our knowledge, there have been no reports describing PET–CT findings for SST in the English- language literature. (Source: Taiwanese Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology)

Extra gonadal sclerosing stromal tumour in the transverse mesocolon.
We report a case of sclerosing stromal tumour of the mesentery in a 32-year-old Para one who presented with intra abdominal mass, menstrual irregularity and secondary infertility. Histopathology and immunohistochemistry of the completely excised tumour was consistent with sclerosing stromal tumour, immunoreactive only to vimentin. No ovarian tissue was found in the sectioned tumour. Her menses became regular and she conceived 3 months after complete excision and delivered after 9 months. Hormonal assay was not done because SST was least suspected. From literature this is the first case of SST in the transverse mesocolon re...

Benign Sex Cord–Stromal Tumors of the Ovary That May Mimic Malignancies
Abstract: The family of ovarian sex cord–stromal tumors (SCSTs) includes a morphologically diverse array of benign and malignant neoplasms. Many of the benign SCSTs bear striking morphologic resemblance to malignancies in the SCST, epithelial, and germ cell tumor families. Chief among these are microcystic stromal tumor, sclerosing stromal tumor, cellular fibroma, typical thecoma, stromal luteoma, Leydig cell tumor, and pregnancy luteoma (a non-neoplastic hormonal proliferation). Although many of these entities are uncommon, awareness of their clinical, gross, and morphologic features is important to avoid overtreatment,...

Gynecologic Lesions Related to Gorlin Syndrome/Nevoid Basal Cell Carcinoma Syndrome
Abstract: Nevoid basal cell carcinoma syndrome, also known as Gorlin syndrome, is an autosomal dominant genetic disorder predisposing affected individuals to characteristic benign and malignant tumors involving the jaw (such as odontogenic keratocyst), skin, brain, ovaries, and heart. Additionally, skeletal malformations and other abnormalities may also be present. Ovarian fibromas are the common neoplasm in the gynecologic tract associated with Nevoid basal cell carcinoma syndrome. Nevoid basal cell carcinoma syndrome–associated ovarian fibromas are typically bilateral and multinodular, associated with calcifications, a...

CT findings of sclerosing stromal tumor of the ovary: A report of two cases and review of the literature.
Authors: Tian T, Zhu Q, Chen W, Wang S, Sui W, Wu J Abstract Sclerosing stromal tumor (SST) of the ovary, which was first described by Chalvardjian and Scully in 1973, is a rare ovarian neoplasm, occurring predominantly in young women. The most common clinical symptom in patients with SST is menstrual irregularities. Microscopically, the tumor is characterized by the presence of pseudo-lobulated cellular areas, with a prominent tendency to sclerosis, marked vascularity and pronounced variation in cellular size and shape. In the current study, 2 cases of SST of the ovary are presented. These cases were conf...

Sclerosing stromal tumor of the ovaries overexpressing vascular endothelial growth factor: two cases
Sclerosing stromal tumor (SST) is histologically benign and accounts for 6% of the tumors derived from the stroma of the ovaries [1]. The patients who are diagnosed with an SST are predominantly in their 20s and 30s, unlike other stromal tumors [2,3]. Clinical imaging by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) shows high vascularity and a solid part in SSTs. Many cases are suspected as a malignant tumor before surgery, during which, a unilateral ovary is removed without partial preservation. (Source: Taiwanese Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology)

Sclerosing stromal tumour of the ovary: two case reports.
Authors: Limaiem F, Boudabous E, Ben Slama S, Chelly B, Lahmar A, Bouraoui S, Gara F, Mzabi S Abstract Sclerosing stromal tumours are rare benign ovarian neoplasms of the sex cord stromal that occur predominantly in the second and third decades of life. Herein, we report two cases of sclerosing stromal tumour of the ovary. The two patients were 16 and 45 years old and both presented with pelvic pain. Ultrasonography demonstrated a heterogeneous solid mass of the left and right ovary, respectively, with some cystic foci in the second tumour. Laboratory tests including tumour markers and serum hormonal assay...

Laparoscopic Management of Sclerosing Stromal Tumors of the Ovary Combined with Ectopic Pregnancy
Like other stromal-derived gynecological tumors, a sclerosing stromal tumor of the ovary (SSTO) is a rare benign tumor that is difficult to distinguish from a malignant ovarian tumor in clinical practice. An SSTO is routinely treated with laparotomy. Here, we present two extremely rare cases of SSTO with contralateral and ipsilateral tubal pregnancies, in which laparoscopic surgery was performed to remove the tumors. After surgery, one patient (case 1) became pregnant twice within 29 months, and the other patient (case 2) did not become pregnant within 6 months postoperatively. These two cases suggest that laparoscopic man...

Sclerosing Stromal Tumors With Prominent Luteinization During Pregnancy: A Report of 8 Cases Emphasizing Diagnostic Problems
We report 8 sclerosing stromal tumors with massive luteinization discovered in pregnant patients. The tumors ranged from 3.1 to 21 cm (mean=8.8 cm) in size and were typically solid and yellow; the neoplasm was bilateral in 1 case. On microscopic examination, the lutein cells, a feature of sclerosing stromal tumor, had more copious eosinophilic cytoplasm and were more numerous than is usually seen in nonpregnant patients and to varying degrees obscured the typical pseudolobular pattern. This resulted in particular diagnostic difficulty in 3 cases, especially when associated with other changes including irregular shapes of t...

Laparoscopic treatment of sclerosing stromal tumor of the ovary in a woman with Gorlin-Goltz Syndrome: a case report and review of the literature
This report describes a rare association between Gorlin-Goltz syndrome and the sclerosing stromal tumor of the ovary. Since the ultrasounds and magnetic resonance pattern of this tumor can be similar to those of a malignant neoplasm, a prompt surgical intervention and histological confirmation of diagnosis is mandatory. However this is a benign lesion and thus can be approached with a laparoscopic fertility sparing surgery. Gynecologists should be aware of this possible association, in order to provide an appropriate counseling to these women, and to perform a fertility sparing laparoscopic approach, wherever possible. Te...

On the Pathogenesis of Sclerosing Stromal Tumor of the Ovary: A Neoplasm in Transition
We report 11 cases of SST, 6 of which were associated with another type or other types of ovarian stromal tumor. In 4 of these, a transition from thecoma of either typical or luteinized type to SST was observed. Our index case was that of a 16-yr-old girl who had a typical thecoma that underwent involutional changes in an extensive subserosal portion of the tumor with conversion to SST. In our series, 3 cases of SST underwent transformation to ovarian myxoma, one of which also contained a component of thecoma. The active SST components stained for inhibin, steroidogenic factor 1, and α-smooth muscle actin, but were negati...
