Epilepsy care in the southern Caribbean
In conclusion, patients with epilepsy in the southern Caribbean have excellent access to government clinics and hospitals, but AED choices are limited. Local medical providers reported that the major limitations in care were lack of specialty care, lack of imaging and EEG services, financial barriers to care, long wait times for care, and limited access to additional AEDs. A needs assessment to determine the need for respiratory therapy in complex continuing care: A methods paper.
CONCLUSION: A range of tools and methods are needed to conduct needs assessments for respiratory therapy in complex continuing care. Using multiple data sources, a significant burden of respiratory diseases was present at the Saint Vincent Hospital; further studies in other complex continuing care hospitals are needed to understand the significance of these findings among this patient population more generally. E-038 multiple stent-assisted endovascular management of the rapid-growing internal carotid artery dorsal wall aneurysms: how many stents are enough?
ConclusionsBecause rapid growth of aneurysm had high re-bleeding tendency, we had done multiple stent deploying. The results of endovascular procedures of this type of aneurysm are satisfactory. But we don’t know yet, how many stents are enough. However multiple stent-assisted coil embolization can be considered as an alternative treatment option for rapid-growing dorsal wall aneurysms.DisclosuresD. Lee: None. J. Sung: None. J. Huh: None. Y. Pilot Study Compares Scores of the Resident Assessment Instrument Minimum Data Set Version 2.0 (MDS 2.0) Pressure Ulcer Risk Scale with the Braden Pressure Ulcer Risk Assessment for Patients in Complex Continuing Care.
CONCLUSION: This preliminary study may provide some evidence that the MDS 2.0 PURS may be an alternative risk assessment tool option that utilizes mandatory collected data, reduces workload duplication, and would generate a Resident Assessment Protocol, when indicated, in complex continuing care. Diabetes care – improvement through measurement
The National Diabetes Register (NDR) of Sweden was initiated in response to The Saint Vincent Declaration (published 1990), to provide a tool for continuous quality assurance in diabetes care. The original purpose, to monitor the results of health centres from year to year and to compare these with national and regional means, is still the most important one, while continuous follow-up of guidelines, treatments and complications are as important on a national level. The data reported contain basal clinical characteristics of the patients, as well as measures of risk-factor control and the presence of diabetes complications....

Modeling the impact of changing patient flow processes in an emergency department: Insights from a computer simulation study
We report on the use of discrete-event simulation modeling to support process improvements in a hospital emergency department (ED), namely the implementation of a split-flow process. Our partner hospital was effective in treating patients, but wait time and congestion in the ED created patient dissatisfaction, unsafe conditions and staff morale issues. The split-flow concept is an emerging approach to manage ED processes by splitting patient flow according to patient acuity and enabling parallel processing. We contrast the split-flow operational model to other types of ED triage. While early implementations of the split-fl...

The Effectiveness of Disaster Risk Communication: A Systematic Review of Intervention Studies
The objectives of the interventions were to improve the health knowledge and behaviour in relation to disasters, and to decrease the incidence of negative health events. The studies were chosen on that basis, and several studies reported additional outcomes that were outside the scope of this review. The knowledge, behaviour and incidence outcomes are described in detail in Appendix 3 (characteristics and results of included studies). Results of Individual Studies 1 Effect of Risk Communication Interventions to Promote Disaster Mitigation and Preparedness 1.1 Communication to Promote Mitigation and Preparedness for Infec...

Seroprevalence of Seven Zoonotic Pathogens in Pregnant Women from the Caribbean.
The objective of this study was to examine the seroprevalence of seven zoonotic agents among individuals residing on 10 English-speaking Caribbean countries. Sera from healthy, pregnant women were collected from Antigua-Barbuda, Belize, Bermuda, Dominica, Grenada, Jamaica, Montserrat, St. Kitts-Nevis, St. Lucia, and St. Vincent-Grenadines and tested for the presence of IgG antibodies to dengue virus, hepatitis E virus, hantaviruses, leptospiral agents, spotted fever group rickettsiae (SFGR), typhus group rickettsiae (TGR), and Coxiella burnetii (Q fever). The highest seroprevalence values were observed for dengue virus, SF...
