Optimal Blood Glucose Monitoring Interval for Insulin Infusion in Critically Ill Non-Cardiothoracic Patients: A Pilot Study
CONCLUSION: In patients requiring insulin infusion for sustained hyperglycemia in ICU, the risk of hypoglycemic episodes was not significantly different with less frequent BG monitoring. The compliance to hourly blood glucose monitoring and ICU was variable, and hypoglycemic episodes were similar across the groups despite the variation in monitoring.PMID:33682835 | PMC:PMC7975947 | DOI:10.23750/abm.v92i1.9083 (Source: Acta Bio-Medica : Atenei Parmensis)

The Impact on Medical Students of the 9/11 Attacks on New York's World Trade Center.
This study was designed to characterize the short- and long-term effects on NYMC students and to compare those effects between students assigned to St Vincent's Hospital and classmates assigned to rotations at facilities more remote from the attack site. We hypothesized that participation in direct relief efforts by students assigned to the St. Vincent's site might have long-lasting effects on their lives and these effects might vary when compared to classmates assigned elsewhere. Approach: This was a retrospective, survey-based, unmatched cohort study. Participants included all school of medicine graduates who were St. Vi...

[Uneven decline in fertility rates in adolescents in 32 countries of the Region of the Americas, 1960-2019Diminui ção desigual nas taxas de fecundidade de adolescentes em 32 países da Região das Américas, 1960-2019].
Conclusions: The time series is largely non-stationary, with a downward trend to 2023. There has been an uneven decline in AFRs, with significant differences among the four groups of countries categorized by their AFR in 2019. The lowest AFRs correspond to two countries in North America, five in the non-Latin Caribbean, and one in South America. The highest AFRs correspond to countries in the Latin Caribbean and in Central and South America. PMID: 32684915 [PubMed] (Source: Pan American Journal of Public Health)

A profile on the Synovasure Alpha Defensin Test for the detection of periprosthetic infections.
Authors: Senneville E, Robineau O, Loiez C, de Saint Vincent B, Dartus J, Migaud H Abstract INTRODUCTION: Clinicians have waited a long time for a "universal" marker that may help them distinguish infected from non-infected total joint arthroplasties when doubts persist after using classical clinical and biological signs of infection. In recent years, synovial fluid biomarkers including leukocyte esterase, alpha-defensins, and CRP have shown promising results for the diagnosis of periprosthetic joint infections (PJIs). AREAS COVERED: This review provides an overview of the rational and the use of t...

Hypocalcemia with Immune Checkpoint Inhibitors: The Disparity among Various Reports.
Authors: Nalluru SS, Piranavan P, Ning Y, Ackula H, Siddiqui AD, Trivedi N Abstract Immune-related adverse events affecting parathyroid function are rarely reported with immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICPIs). Activating calcium-sensing receptor antibodies causing autoimmune hypoparathyroidism with nivolumab was recently reported. KEYNOTE-189 and CHECKMATE-067 trials reported a 21-29% hypocalcemia event rate, but the etiology of hypocalcemia was not reported. A chart review was performed to study patients receiving ICPI from 2015 to 2018 at multiple sites affiliated with Saint Vincent Hospital. The study pop...

Taxation of unprocessed sugar or sugar-added foods for reducing their consumption and preventing obesity or other adverse health outcomes.
CONCLUSIONS: There was very limited evidence and the certainty of the evidence was very low. Despite the reported reduction in consumption of taxed sugar-added foods, we are uncertain whether taxing unprocessed sugar or sugar-added foods has an effect on reducing their consumption and preventing obesity or other adverse health outcomes. Further robustly conducted studies are required to draw concrete conclusions on the effectiveness of taxing unprocessed sugar or sugar-added foods for reducing their consumption and preventing obesity or other adverse health outcomes. Towards Implementation of the Saint Vincent Declaration: Outcomes of Women with Pregestational Diabetes.
CONCLUSIONS: The multi-disciplinary approach for treating women with PGDM practiced in the high-risk pregnancy clinic at the Sheba Medical Center resulted in lower rates of macrosomia, LGA, and pregnancy induced hypertension compared to rates reported in the literature.
