Non-surgical management in children with non-refluxing primary megaureter: a systematic review and meta-analysis
ConclusionsThe low pooled prevalence of secondary surgical intervention and high pooled prevalence of resolution may support the current non-surgical management in children with non-refluxing primary megaureter. However, these results should be interpreted cautiously due to the limited available body of evidence. Future studies should overcome existing limitations of imaging methods by using standardized, comparable criteria and report outcome parameters in a quantitative manner. This would allow more sufficient data synthesis to provide evidence-based recommendations for clinical decision-making and counseling.Systematic ...

The emerging role of the urinary microbiome in benign noninfectious urological conditions: an up-to-date systematic review
ConclusionThe study of the urogenital microbiome is rapidly expanding in urology. Noninfectious benign urogenital diseases, such as BPH, calcium oxalate stones, CPPS, and OAB were found to be associated with specific microbial taxonomies. Further research with larger study populations is necessary to solidify the knowledge of the urine microbiome in these conditions and to facilitate the creation of microbiome-based diagnostic and therapeutic approaches.

The effect of exercise on vascular health in chronic kidney disease: a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials
Am J Physiol Renal Physiol. 2023 Sep 21. doi: 10.1152/ajprenal.00152.2023. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPatients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) are at increased risk of cardiovascular disease. This increased risk cannot be fully explained by traditional risk factors such as hypertension. Endothelial dysfunction and arterial stiffness have been suggested as factors which explain some of the increased risk, and are independently associated with important cardiovascular outcomes in CKD patients. Studies in other disease populations have shown positive effects of exercise on vascular dysfunction. The aim of this review was...

Comparison of young and old patients on peritoneal dialysis: A retrospective observational study
CONCLUSION: Peritonitis and technical survival evaluations of elderly PD patients, other than mortality, were lower than younger PD patients. However, the need for help is one of the biggest obstacles to this method for the elderly. We believe that incentives in this regard will increase the number of elderly PD patients.PMID:37734902 | DOI:10.1111/sdi.13180

Health inequities in dialysis care: A scoping review
CONCLUSIONS: Our scoping review examined current literature on health inequities pertaining to dialysis and found gaps concerning LGBTQ+ and patients with lower levels of education. To help fill these gaps, and possibly alleviate additional burden to these patients, we recommend cultural competency training for providers and dialysis center staff as well as community-based educational programs to improve dialysis patients' health literacy.PMID:37734842 | DOI:10.1111/sdi.13176

The Significance of Hematuria in Podocytopathies
CONCLUSIONS: Hematuria is prevalent among participants with the three podocytopathies and is significantly and independently associated with worse kidney-related outcomes, including both progressive loss of kidney function remission of proteinuria.PMID:37733352 | DOI:10.2215/CJN.0000000000000309

Green tea polyphenols alleviate kidney injury induced by di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate in mice
CONCLUSION: GTP can alleviate DEHP-induced kidney damage and regulate immune cell infiltration. We screened four important miRNA-mRNA-protein regulatory axes of GTP mitigating DEHP-induced kidney damage in mice.PMID:37734331 | DOI:10.1159/000534106

Development and evaluation of the MiCheck ® Prostate test for clinically significant prostate cancer
CONCLUSIONS: The MiCheck® Prostate test identifies clinically significant prostate cancer with high sensitivity and negative predictive value (NPV). It can be performed in a clinical laboratory using a Roche Cobas clinical chemistry analyzer. The MiCheck® Prostate test could assist in reducing unnecessary prostate biopsies with a marginal number of patients experiencing a delayed diagnosis.PMID:37734979 | DOI:10.1016/j.urolonc.2023.08.005

Kidney functional reserve, KFR, and damage biomarkers in subclinical chronic kidney disease complicated by acute kidney injury
Am J Physiol Renal Physiol. 2023 Sep 21. doi: 10.1152/ajprenal.00133.2023. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTSignificant loss of kidney function is not easily identified by serum creatinine (sCr)-based measurements. In the presence of normal sCr, decreased KFR may identify significant loss of function. We evaluated KFR in experimental subclinical chronic kidney disease (sCKD) before and after brief ischemia-reperfusion injury (IRI). Using fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC)-labelled sinistrin, GFR was measured transcutaneously before and after adenine induced sCKD, and 1 and 2 weeks after brief IRI, and compared with urinary kid...

Pharmacological inhibition of the MLL1-menin-interaction aggravates acute kidney injury induced by folic acid and ischemia/reperfusion in mice
In this study, we investigated the role and mechanisms of MLL1 in murine models of acute kidney injury (AKI) induced by folic acid (FA) and ischemia/reperfusion (I/R). Injury to the kidney elevated expression of MLL1, Menin, WDR5 and H3K4Me3, which was accompanied by increased serum creatinine (Scr) and blood urea nitrogen (BUN), renal tubular injury and apoptosis. Pharmacological inhibition of MLL1 activity with MI503 to disrupt the interaction between MLL1 with Menin further increased Scr and BUN levels, enhanced expression of neutrophil gelatinase associated lipocalin and kidney injury molecule-1, and induced more apopt...

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease Mortality in Bladder Cancer Patients: A SEER-Based Competing Risk Analysis
CONCLUSIONS: In comparison to the general population, the risk of COPD mortality is significantly higher in patients with BC. Pre-identification of high-risk groups and respiratory care provisions are important measures to effectively improve survival in this group of patients.PMID:37727915 | DOI:10.22037/uj.v20i.7644

Comparison of the One-Step Prone Split-Leg Position to the Traditional Prone Position for Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy: A Single-Center Retrospective Study
CONCLUSION: The one-step prone split-leg position is a safe and reliable surgical posture for treating upper urinary calculi in PCNL patients. It can not only shorten the overall operation time of PCNL but also improve the stone removal rate of the operation, thus reducing the secondary operation rate of multiple renal stones.PMID:37727914 | DOI:10.22037/uj.v20i.7724

Comparison of Health-Related Quality of Life Changes in Prostate Cancer Patients Undergoing Laparoscopic versus Robotic-Assisted Laparoscopic Radical Prostatectomy: A Systematic review
CONCLUSION: Both robotic-assisted and laparoscopic radical prostatectomy are valid treatment options to achieve a good quality of life following surgery. The intermediate and long-term results in regard to QoL are comparable between the two procedures. RALRP might be superior to LRP in terms of immediate health-related quality of life, which might contribute to early recovery of urinary function.PMID:37727913 | DOI:10.22037/uj.v20i.7707
