The Anesthesiology Physician-Scientist Pipeline: Current Status and Recommendations for Future Growth-An Initiative of the Anesthesia Research Council
Anesth Analg. 2023 Oct 1;137(4):728-742. doi: 10.1213/ANE.0000000000006520. Epub 2023 Sep 5.ABSTRACTThe limited number and diversity of resident physicians pursuing careers as physician-scientists in medicine has been a concern for many decades. The Anesthesia Research Council aimed to address the status of the anesthesiology physician-scientist pipeline, benchmarked against other medical specialties, and to develop strategic recommendations to sustain and expand the number and diversity of anesthesiology physician-scientists. The working group analyzed data from the Association of American Medical Colleges and the Nationa...

Dementia and Hearing Aid Use and Cessation: A National Study
CONCLUSIONS: Older adults with (vs. without) dementia are more likely to cease hearing aid use over time, most notably during the first year after adoption. Strategies to support hearing ability, such as self-management or care partner education, may improve communication for those living with co-occurring hearing loss and dementia.PMID:37713529 | DOI:10.1044/2023_AJA-23-00038

Effect of work from home and employee mental health through mediating role of workaholism and work-family balance
This study provides real-world guidance to human resource managers on how to prioritize composite-level interventions at all levels of the university to create highly satisfied employees, provide a good working environment, and improve employees' mental health.ORIGINALITY/VALUE: Many researches have been done on the relationship between work-from-home and employee mental health, but relatively few have looked at how work-life balance and workaholism play a role in how work-from-home affects employees' mental health. This study fills a need in the academic and practitioner literature by investigating the relationship betwee...

Research Agenda for Physical Therapy from the American Physical Therapy Association
Phys Ther. 2023 Sep 15:pzad126. doi: 10.1093/ptj/pzad126. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTResearch agendas play an important role in directing scholarly inquiry in a field. The Research Agenda for Physical Therapy From the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) outlines research priorities that are vital to advancing physical therapist practice and the profession. The development of the research agenda included multiple iterative steps and feedback from stakeholders. A research agenda subgroup (n = 6) of the APTA Scientific Practice and Advisory Committee (SPAC), with APTA staff support, gathered information on existin...

From the Flight Deck to the Bedside: Core Aviation Concepts Applied to Acute Care Physical Therapist Practice and Education
Phys Ther. 2023 Sep 15:pzad125. doi: 10.1093/ptj/pzad125. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe health care industry has sought to reduce errors and patient harm by drawing upon human factors research developed largely in the aviation industry. However, literature that explicitly applies human factors concepts to physical therapist practice is scarce. Therefore, this clinical perspective highlights key concepts in aviation safety and training that should be considered for application to physical therapist education and practice in the acute care setting, including the law of primacy, pilot in command, crew resource management,...

Prevalence of trichomoniasis infection among adults in Nigerian community settings
CONCLUSION: The prevalence of TV infection is high among sexually active adults in the Nigerian community. It is therefore crucial to implement the increased public health actions such as regular and early diagnosis to reduce its prevalence.PMID:37713889 | DOI:10.1097/MD.0000000000034585

Achromatic diffractive liquid-crystal optics for virtual reality displays
In this study, we demonstrate an achromatic diffractive liquid-crystal device to overcome this longstanding chromatic aberration issue. The proposed device consists of three stacked diffractive liquid crystal optical elements with specifically designed spectral response and polarization selectivity. The concept is validated by both simulations and experiments. Our experimental results show a significant improvement in imaging performance with two types of light engines: a laser projector and an organic light-emitting diode display panel. In addition, our simulation results indicate that the lateral color shift is reduced b...

Preventing controlled substance diversion in perioperative settings: a narrative review
CONCLUSION: Although awareness of perioperative controlled substance diversion has been improving, there are too few data to suggest an optimal approach. Anesthesia departments will need to work collaboratively with hospital pharmacies and actively select strategies that are reasonable given local resources.PMID:37715047 | DOI:10.1007/s12630-023-02574-4

Headache Disorders in VHA Primary Care: Prevalence, Psychiatric Comorbidity, and Health Care Utilization
Behav Med. 2023 Sep 15:1-10. doi: 10.1080/08964289.2023.2249169. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTMilitary veterans are at increased risk for headache disorders compared to the general population, yet the prevalence and burden associated with headache disorders among veterans is not yet well understood. In this electronic medical record study, we examined the prevalence of headache disorders among veterans seen in a northeastern network of Veterans Health Administration (VHA) primary care during 2017-2018. We also examined rates of psychiatric comorbidity and health care utilization of veterans with headache disorders for the...

Mit.OnOff: A Science Communication Project for Public Awareness about Mitochondrial Cytopathies
CONCLUSION: It is hoped that the production of this book will give patients a sense of inclusion and representation in the media. This, in turn, will contribute to achieving the SDG targets (3,4,5,8,10,12), i.e., ensuring people live healthy lives, reducing child mortality, and increasing life expectancy, ensuring access to inclusive, equitable and quality education for all, ensuring gender equality, and contributing to a peaceful and prosperous world.PMID:37711115 | DOI:10.2174/1871530323666230914114434

The lived experience of depression: a bottom-up review co-written by experts by experience and academics
World Psychiatry. 2023 Oct;22(3):352-365. doi: 10.1002/wps.21111.ABSTRACTWe provide here the first bottom-up review of the lived experience of depression, co-written by experts by experience and academics. First-person accounts within and outside the medical field were screened and discussed in collaborative workshops involving numerous individuals with lived experience of depression, family members and carers, representing a global network of organizations. The material was enriched by phenomenologically informed perspectives and shared with all collaborators in a cloud-based system. The subjective world of depression was...
