Academy of Plant-based Physical Therapy: overdue to address a nutrition crisis with a transformative population approach
J Phys Ther Sci. 2023 Sep;35(9):645-658. doi: 10.1589/jpts.35.645. Epub 2023 Sep 2.ABSTRACTThis timely evidence synthesis supports the need for an Academy of Plant-based Physical Therapy. Given epidemiological and empirical evidence and the profession's values and practice scope, the time has come for a specialty of plant-based physical therapy based on population health principles. This review connects these factors. Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) are largely nutrition-related resulting from unnatural elements of our diet (i.e., heart disease, several cancers, hypertension, stroke, diabetes, obesity, gastrointestinal di...

Cardiovascular comorbidities in atopic dermatitis: Potential implications for the use of Janus kinase inhibitors
To the Editor: The Food and Drug Administration recently approved the use of 2 oral Janus kinase (JAK) inhibitors —abrocitinib and upadacitinib—for patients with moderate-to-severe atopic dermatitis (AD) not adequately controlled with systemic therapies, including biologics, or when the use of such treatments is inadvisable.1,2 In September 2021, the Food and Drug Administration issued a boxed warning for a ll JAK inhibitors regarding the increased risk of serious infections, heart attack, stroke, cancer, blood clots, and death.

News at a glance: A win for obesity drugs, a new infectious disease institute head, and Mexican fireflies under threat
CONSERVATION Researchers raise alarm over threat to Mexican fireflies Scientists from the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) last week delivered a letter to the Mexican government requesting it regulate tourism centered on the threatened firefly species Photinus palaciosi . Endemic to Mexico’s Tlaxcala forests, P. palaciosi is one of the few species that glow in synchrony, offering an annual spectacle that attracts thousands of visitors during summer mating season. The letter describes how littering, artificial light, and noise interfere with the insects’ courtship and eg...

A study of the correlation between stroke and gut microbiota over the last 20years: a bibliometric analysis
ConclusionFindings suggest that in the next 10 years, the number of publications produced annually may increase significantly. Future research trends tend to concentrate on the mechanisms of stroke and gut microbiota, with the inflammation and immunological mechanisms, TMAO, and fecal transplantation as hotspots. And the relationship between these mechanisms and a particular cardiovascular illness may also be a future research trend.

Position statement from the Indian Society of Gastroenterology, Cardiological Society of India, Indian Academy of Neurology and Vascular Society of India on gastrointestinal bleeding and endoscopic procedures in patients on antiplatelet and/or anticoagulant therapy
AbstractAntiplatelet and/or anticoagulant agents (collectively known as antithrombotic agents) are used to reduce the risk of thromboembolic events in patients with conditions such as atrial fibrillation, acute coronary syndrome, recurrent stroke prevention, deep vein thrombosis, hypercoagulable states and endoprostheses. Antithrombotic-associated gastrointestinal (GI) bleeding is an increasing burden due to the growing population of advanced age with multiple comorbidities and the expanding indications for the use of antiplatelet agents and anticoagulants. GI bleeding in antithrombotic users is associated with an increase...

Effects of Patient Comorbidities and Demographics on Episode-of-Care Costs Following Total Shoulder Arthroplasty
CONCLUSION: Providers should be aware that certain demographic variables and comorbidities (history of stroke, dementia, chronic pulmonary disease, anemia, heart disease, advanced age, and elevated body mass index) are associated with an increase in total costs following primary shoulder arthroplasty. Further study is required to determine whether bundled payment target costs should be adjusted to better compensate for specific comorbidities.LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: Level IV case series.PMID:36749879 | DOI:10.5435/JAAOS-D-22-00450

A scoping review of recent advancements in intervention and outcome measures for post-stroke cognitive impairments
Conclusion: Regardless of many new developments in post-stroke cognitive rehabilitation interventions driven by technology, there is limited data available on actual implementation as a scalable solution. There is an extensive need for future research for evidence-based assessment and management of cognitive impairments in post-stroke rehabilitation.

Collateral circulation- Evolving from time window to tissue window
Archana Sharma, Ayush Agarwal, Venugopalan Y Vishnu, MV Padma SrivastavaAnnals of Indian Academy of Neurology 2023 26(1):10-16 Cerebral collateral circulation refers to the auxiliary vascular structures which compensate cerebral blood flow when it has been compromised due to stenosis or occlusion of the principal supplying arteries. They play a vital role in sustaining blood flow to the ischemic areas in acute, subacute or chronic phases of ischemic stroke or TIA. Good collateral circulation has shown protective effects towards a favorable functional outcome and a lower risk of recurrence of stroke. The benchmark mechanic...
