Neurologic Complications After Pediatric Heart Transplant: A Single-Center Experience
CONCLUSIONS: Neurologic complications may lead to serious mortality and morbidity in pediatric heart transplant patients. Seizures, posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome, stroke, peripheral neuropathy, transient ischemic attack, and cerebral infections are the most common neurologic complications, which are seen in the perioperative period in particular. Careful follow-up of pediatric heart transplant patients, with detection and early treatment of neurologic findings, will contribute to lower rates of sequelae. To our knowledge, this is the largest study to show a detailed experience of neurologic complications in ...

Risk Factors and Prognostic Implications of Perioperative Stroke after Heart Transplantation: An Analysis of the United Network for Organ Sharing Database 2009-2019
The purpose of our study was to evaluate risk factors and prognostic implications of perioperative stroke in heart transplantation.

Low Left Ventricular Stroke Work Index is Associated with a Poor Prognosis in LVAD Patients
Hemocompatibility-related adverse events (HRAE) are thought to be largely driven by the pump-patient interaction. We hypothesized that patients with left ventricular assist devices (LVADs) with low left ventricular stroke work index (LVSWI), and thus less native contribution to total flow, would have more adverse clinical outcomes.

Hyperhomocysteinemia and Oxidative Stress May Predict the Risk of Stroke in Patients Supported by Continuous Flow Left Ventricular Assist Devices
Stroke is one of the leading complications during CF-LVAD support. The purpose of this observational study was to investigate the temporal relationship of circulating homocysteine (Hcy) and oxidative stress as potential markers to identify CF-LVAD patients at risk for developing postoperative strokes.

Prolonged Circulatory Arrest is Not Associated with Stroke or Mortality after Pulmonary Thromboendarterectomy
Patients with chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension (CTEPH) frequently present with extensive distal clot burden, which adds complexity to pulmonary thromboendarterectomy (PTE). Complete endarterectomy often necessitates prolonged periods of hypothermic circulatory arrest (HCA), the ramifications of which are poorly understood. Objectives were to describe the association of HCA time with post-operative neurologic complications, operative mortality and other major morbidity after PTE.

Improvement in Right Ventricular Stroke Work Index in Cardiogenic Shock Associated with Excellent Durable Left Ventricular Assist Implantation Results
Cardiogenic shock results from inadequate cardiac output to satisfy organ perfusion with potential need for pharmacologic and mechanical circulatory support for survival. Impella 5.0 insertion is used as a rescue device and bridge to durable mechanical circulatory support. We sought to evaluate changes in right ventricular parameters in patients bridged with Impella 5.0 undergoing durable left ventricular device implantation (LVAD).

Incidence, Predictors and Outcomes of Stroke Following Cardiac Transplantation
Stroke after heart transplantation (HT) is a major cause of morbidity and mortality. Less is known about the risk factors associated with stroke in the current era of increasing HT being performed in older patients and with advances in immunosuppressive (IS) therapies. We aimed to determine the incidence, predictors and outcomes of stroke after HT.

Percent Increase in Left Ventricular Stroke Work Index and Right Ventricular Stroke Work Index after Milrinone Infusion Predicts Escalation of Therapy and Mortality
We hypothesized that changes in biventricular function would approximate myocardial reserve and predict outcomes.

Prognostic Role of Simultaneous Assessment of Biventricular Function Using Left Ventricular Stroke Work Index and Right Ventricular Stroke Work Index
We hypothesized that simultaneous assessment of biventricular function could predict clinical outcomes.

Elevated Blood Pressure Before Left Ventricular Assist Device Support Implant is Associated with an Increased Risk of Stroke
Despite the recent advances in Left Ventricular Assist Device (LVAD) therapy, stroke remains a frequent and catastrophic complication. Hypertension (HTN) after LVAD implant has been associated with an increased risk of stroke, but the association between HTN before LVAD implant and stroke has never been studied. We hypothesized that LVAD patients with elevated blood pressure (BP) during outpatient visits before the LVAD implant may have an increased risk of stroke.
