Acute Kidney Injury as a Leading Cause of Papal Deaths in the Years 1277 to 2005: A Review of 21 Cases
CONCLUSIONS: Sepsis-associated acute kidney injury, a syndrome with a complex pathogenesis and poor prognosis, which is far from being fully understood, contributed to a high number of papal deaths.PMID:37496352 | DOI:10.6002/ect.IAHNCongress.20

Preoperative higher right ventricular stroke work index increases the risk of de novo aortic insufficiency after continuous-flow left ventricular assist device implantation
This study investigated the influence of preoperative hemodynamic parameters on de novo AI in CF-LVAD recipients. We reviewed 125 patients who underwent CF-LVAD implantation without concomitant AV surgery between 2005 and 2018. De novo AI was defined as moderate or severe AI in those with none or trivial preoperative AI. During mean 30  ± 16 months of CF-LVAD support, de novo AI-free rate was 86% and 67% at 1 and 2 years, respectively. Multivariable analysis showed that higher right ventricular stroke work index (RVSWI) (hazard ratio, 1.12 /g/m2/beat; 95% confidence interval, 1.00 –1.20;p = 0.047) and trivial ...

Drug Overdose and Cardiovascular Deaths Among Deceased Organ Donors: Implications for Donor Utilization and Data Reporting
CONCLUSIONS Current COD definitions should be expanded to capture significant differences in the donor population. DI donors are the fastest growing cohort and the most likely utilized DBD donors, while trauma donors remain the most likely utilized DCD donors.PMID:37401050 | DOI:10.12659/AOT.940255

In-hospital stroke and mortality trends after left ventricular assist device implantation in the United States from 2017 to 2019
CONCLUSIONS: Our study found a significant downtrend in the in-hospital mortality rates among patients with LVAD without substantial changes in stroke rate trends over the study timeframe. As stroke rates remained steady, we hypothesize that improved management along with better control of blood pressure, could have played an important role in survival benefit over the study time frame.PMID:37387231 | DOI:10.1177/03913988231183723
