Comparison of Performance Achievement Award Recognition With Primary Stroke Center Certification for Acute Ischemic Stroke Care Stroke
Conclusions While both PSC certification and GWTG-Stroke PAA recognition identified hospitals providing higher conformity with care measures for patients hospitalized with acute ischemic stroke, PAA recognition was a more robust identifier of hospitals with better performance.

Stroke Severity Is a Crucial Predictor of Outcome: An International Prospective Validation Study Stroke
Conclusions In this prospective pilot study, the baseline NIHSS score was essential for prediction of acute ischemic stroke outcomes, followed by age; whereas traditional comorbidity index contributed little to the overall model. Future studies of stroke outcomes between different care systems will benefit from including a baseline NIHSS score.

Conclusions In this large cohort study, PE occurred in nearly 1% of AIS patients. PE was more common in patients with severe stroke, history of cancer, previous DVT/PE or acute DVT and associated with lower short- and long-term survival, greater disability, and longer length of stay.

I just got back from the North Dakota Mission: Lifeline STEMI and Acute Stroke Conference in Bismark, ND. I had a great time and I learned a lot. I often get asked to speak in various venues about acute STEMI and 12-lead ECG interpretation, but for this conference they wanted me to talk mostly about stroke. Conclusions: Hospitals joining the GWTG-Stroke quality improvement program between 2004-2008 achieved significantly greater improvement in stroke patient outcomes than matched hospitals not joining the program, with lower all-cause mortality at 30 days and 1 year and higher rates of discharge directly to home.

Two-Year Recurrence After First-Ever Stroke in a General Population of 1.4 Million Japanese Patients 　- The Shiga Stroke and Heart Attack Registry Study.
CONCLUSIONS: Two-year cumulative recurrence rate after first-ever stroke remained high, particularly among patients with ischemic stroke, in the present population-based registry study in a real-world setting in Japan. Detection of Atrial Fibrillation Among Patients With Stroke Due to Large or Small Vessel Disease: A Meta-Analysis Stroke
Conclusions AF detection rate is similar in patients with small and large vessel strokes (2.2–2.4%). Because no studies reported on extended monitoring (>7 days) in these stroke populations, we could not estimate the yield of AF detection with long-term cardiac monitoring. Randomized controlled trials are needed to examine the utility of AF detection with long-term cardiac monitoring (>7 days) in this patient population.
