Interactions among variants in TXA2R, P2Y12 and GPIIIa are associated with carotid plaque vulnerability in Chinese population.
Conclusions: The rs1131882, rs2317676, and rs16863323 three-loci interactions may confer a higher risk of carotid plaque vulnerability, and might be potential markers for plaque instability. PMID: 29707133 [PubMed]

New Insights from Studies of Clonal Hematopoiesis.
Abstract Clonal hematopoiesis (CH) describes an asymptomatic expansion of blood cells descended from a single hematopoietic stem cell. Recent studies have shown that CH increases in frequency with aging, and is often driven by somatic mutations in genes that are recurrently mutated in hematologic malignancies. When CH is associated with a mutation in a leukemia-associated gene at a variant allele frequency of 0.02 or greater, it is termed "clonal hematopoiesis of indeterminate potential" (CHIP).  CHIP has a 0.5-1% risk per year of progression to hematological neoplasia, and increases both all-cause mortality and ...

Risk Factors, Biomarkers, Etiology, Outcome and Prognosis of Ischemic Stroke in Cancer Patients
Conclusion: In our study, other causes, AMIMCT and mRS>3 were more common in the ISCP group. We consider that CCS could be more suitable for detecting other causes than TOAST. Biomarkers could be important in the ISCP group. PMID: 29580034 [PubMed - in process]

Elevation of autoantibody level against PDCD11 in patients with transient ischemic attack.
Conclusion: Serum PDCD11-Ab level may serve as a potential biomarker for TIA. PMID: 29507658 [PubMed]

Impact of atrial fibrillation on the development of ischemic stroke among cancer patients classified by CHA2DS2-VASc score-a nationwide cohort study.
Conclusions: The impact of AF on risk of ischemic stroke was attenuated with advancing CHA2DS2-VASc score in patients with cancer. PMID: 29484138 [PubMed]

Clinical significances and features of prompt brain CT scan after intracranial artery stenting: analysis of 501 cases.
Authors: Li J, Cheng SY, Xiong XY, Duan CM, Liu L, Zhou Y, Zhang JR, Wang L, Zhou K, Gong ZL, Liu Y, Wei F, Shuai J, Shen L, Yang QW Abstract Cerebral hemorrhage is a serious complication of intracranial artery stenting that could be fatal without timely identification and treatment. Prompt brain CT scan would help to evaluate whether cerebral hemorrhage occurs, however, the diverse features of the CT scan immediately after stenting could influence the judgement sometimes. Therefore, we analyzed and summarized these features to help to determine the clinical significance of these CT features. The prompt CT features...

Influenza vaccination might reduce the risk of ischemic stroke in patients with atrial fibrillation: A population-based cohort study.
Conclusions: Influenza vaccination might exert a dose-response effect against ischemic stroke in patients with AF who have risk factors for ischemic stroke by reducing the incidence of ischemic stroke, particularly in those aged 65-74 and ≥75 y. PMID: 29348857 [PubMed]

Predictors of unknown cancer in patients with ischemic stroke
AbstractStroke is the second most frequent neurologic finding in postmortem studies of cancer patients. It has also been described as the first expression of an occult cancer. We have studied patients diagnosed with cancer after an ischemic stroke (IS) and we analyze differences with non-tumor patients. Single cohort longitudinal retrospective study of patients admitted to our center with IS diagnosis from 1 January 2012 to 12 December 2014. All patients were followed for 18  months. Patients with transient ischemic infarction or cerebral hemorrhage, active cancer or in the last 5 years, inability to follow-up or absence...

Ischemic stroke in patients with POEMS syndrome: a case report and comprehensive analysis of literature.
Conclusion: Comprehensive analysis of literature revealed several trends in patients with ischemic stroke and POEMS syndrome including a low survival rate and a preponderance of cerebral vasculopathy and multiple cerebral arteries affected. Ischemic stroke may be a poor outcome predictor in patients with POEMS syndrome. Further researches focusing on a larger cohort may help in better characterizing and treating this rare complication of POEMS syndrome. PMID: 29179528 [PubMed]

Increased risk of arterial thromboembolism in older men with breast cancer
ConclusionsWe provide population-based evidence that male breast cancer patients have a substantially elevated risk of ATE in the first year following a cancer diagnosis compared with matched controls. Care providers should consider this heightened risk when evaluating cardiovascular health in men with a recent breast cancer diagnosis.

Association analysis of APO gene polymorphisms with ischemic stroke risk: a case-control study in a Chinese Han population.
This study aimed to assess the association of APO gene polymorphisms and ischemic stroke risk in a Chinese Han population. In this case-control study, we genotyped 14 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in 3 APO genes in 488 cases and 503 controls using Sequenom Mass-ARRAY technology and evaluated their association with ischemic stroke using the χ2 and genetic model analysis. In the allelic model analysis, we determined three SNPs were significantly associated with ischemic stroke: rs693 with a p value of 0.042 (OR = 1.406; 95%CI = 1.011-1.956), rs651821 with a p value of 0.007 (OR = 0.760; 95%CI = 0.622-0.929) and rs6...

The Epidemiology and Clinical Associations of Stroke in Patients with Acute Myeloid Leukemia: A review of 10,972 admissions from the 2012 National Inpatient Sample
Conclusions Patients with AML have an elevated risk of CVA compared to all inpatients and mortality in this population is high. Better characterization of risk factors of stroke in this vulnerable population is still needed. Teaser Acute leukemia predisposes patients toward the development of stroke. The latter, while devastating clinically, has been infrequently studied. Our study, using the 2012 National Inpatient Sample, found a 50-fold increase in the risk of stroke as compared to all inpatient admissions with a corresponding 5.5-fold increased risk of mortality. Significant risk factors for the development of stroke i...
