Androgen Deprivation Therapy and Risk of Cardiovascular Disease in Patients With Prostate Cancer Based on Existence of Cardiovascular Risk
CONCLUSIONS: Compared with GnRH agonists, the GnRH antagonist was found to be associated with a decreased risk of HF, specifically among patients with prior CVD. Among those with no prior CVD, the GnRH antagonist was associated with a decreased risk of IHD but an increased risk of arrhythmia.PMID:36791755 | DOI:10.6004/jnccn.2022.7083

Pioglitazone Use and Reduced Risk of Dementia in Patients With Diabetes Mellitus With a History of Ischemic Stroke
DISCUSSION: Pioglitazone use is associated with a lower risk of dementia in DM patients, particularly in those with a history of stroke or ischemic heart disease, suggesting the possibility of applying a personalized approach when choosing pioglitazone to suppress dementia in DM patients.PMID:36792375 | DOI:10.1212/WNL.0000000000207069

Vitamin D intake and all-cause and cause-specific mortality in Japanese men and women: the Japan Public Health Center-based prospective study
Eur J Epidemiol. 2023 Jan 31. doi: 10.1007/s10654-023-00968-8. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTWhile higher circulating 25-hydroxyvitamin D concentrations have been reported to be associated with decreased risk of all-cause mortality, evidence on dietary vitamin D intake is limited and inconsistent. We investigated whether vitamin D intake is associated with all-cause and cause-specific mortality among Japanese adults. Participants were 42,992 men and 50,693 women who responded to the second survey of the Japan Public Health Center-based Prospective Study (1995-1998) and who were followed up for mortality through 2018. Dieta...

Identification of ligustrazine-based analogs of piperlongumine as potential anti-ischemic stroke agents
Fitoterapia. 2022 Dec 20:105398. doi: 10.1016/j.fitote.2022.105398. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPiper longum has a specific aroma and spicy taste. In addition to edible value, current studies have shown that piper longum also has pharmacological activities such as anti-platelet aggregation, anti-inflammation, anti-cancer, anti-diabetes and anti-depression. Piperlongumine is an alkaloid isolated from Piper longum. Based on our previous studies, four Piperlongumine analogs were synthesized, and their anti-platelet aggregation activities were evaluated. Among them, compound 8 has the strongest anti-platelet aggregation acti...

Comparative Effectiveness and Safety of Direct Oral Anticoagulants Versus Warfarin Among Adults With Cancer and Atrial Fibrillation
CONCLUSIONS: Older adults with cancer and atrial fibrillation exposed to DOACs had similar risks of stroke and systemic embolism and major bleeding as those exposed to warfarin. Relative to warfarin, DOAC use was associated with a similar risk of cardiovascular death and a lower risk of all-cause death.PMID:36453260 | DOI:10.1161/CIRCOUTCOMES.122.008951

Bioinformatic analysis and clinical diagnostic value of hsa_circ_0004099 in acute ischemic stroke
This study investigates the expression and effect of hsa_circ_0004099 in acute ischemic stroke (AIS). We conducted a case-controlled study that included 40 patients with AIS within 24 hours and 40 healthy subjects during the same period as a control group. Differentially expressed circular RNAs (circRNAs) were obtained using GEO2R, and the expression of hsa_circ_0004099 was verified using RT-PCR. Correlation analysis of the National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) disease severity score and ischemic time with hsa_circ_0004099 expression levels was also performed. The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve ...

Glutathione: A Samsonian life-sustaining small molecule that protects against oxidative stress, ageing and damaging inflammation
Front Nutr. 2022 Nov 1;9:1007816. doi: 10.3389/fnut.2022.1007816. eCollection 2022.ABSTRACTMany local and systemic diseases especially diseases that are leading causes of death globally like chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, atherosclerosis with ischemic heart disease and stroke, cancer and severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) causing coronavirus disease 19 (COVID-19), involve both, (1) oxidative stress with excessive production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) that lower glutathione (GSH) levels, and (2) inflammation. The GSH tripeptide (γ- L-glutamyl-L-cysteinyl-glycine), the most abundant w...

The Development of Neuroimaging Biomarkers for Cognitive Decline in Sickle Cell Disease
Sickle cell disease (SCD) is complicated by neurologic complications including vasculopathy, hemorrhagic or ischemic overt stroke, silent cerebral infarcts and cognitive dysfunction. Patients with SCD, even in the absence of vasculopathy or stroke, have experience cognitive dysfunction that progresses with age. Transcranial Doppler ultrasound and structural brain MRI are currently used for primary and secondary stroke prevention, but laboratory or imaging biomarkers do not currently exist that are specific to the risk of cognitive dysfunction in patients with SCD. Recent investigations have used advanced MR sequences asses...

Study Protocol and Baseline Characteristics of Randomized Trial for Evaluating Secondary Prevention Efficacy of Combination Therapy-Statin and Eicosapentaenoic Acid: RESPECT-EPA, The Combination of a Randomized Control Trial and an Observational Biomarker Study
CONCLUSIONS: After this study is completed, we will have further evidence on whether a highly purified EPA is effective in reducing cardiovascular events for secondary prevention or not, as well as whether if EPA/AA ratio is a predictor for future cardiovascular events.PMID:36372250 | DOI:10.1016/j.ahj.2022.11.008

Association Between Aromatase Inhibitors and Myocardial Infarction Morbidity in Women With Breast Cancer: A Meta-Analysis of Observational Studies
CONCLUSION: Based on real-world data, AIs may be a safe treatment route for patients with estrogen receptor-positive breast cancer and those with a history of CVD. AIs caused a major decrease in MI in patients without CVD history. However, more in-depth investigations are needed to explore the association between AI use and the incidence of MI in the treatment of estrogen receptor-positive breast cancer.PMID:36346929 | DOI:10.1177/10732748221132512
