Authors: Zhao L, Liu L, Zhang CS, Zeng L, Zhao J, Wang L, Jing X, Wang K, Li B Abstract Background: Dysphagia is a common complication of stroke, affecting up to 78% of stroke patients. The existence of dysphagia after stroke has been associated with an increased risk for pulmonary complications and even mortality. Previous studies have shown that acupuncture could be potential therapeutic method for treatment of dysphagia after stroke. A prospective randomized controlled pilot trial is designed to evaluate the effect of He's Santong needling method on dysphagia after stroke. Methods and Design: Sixty eligible ...

Swallowing therapy for dysphagia in acute and subacute stroke.
CONCLUSIONS: Moderate- and low-quality evidence suggests that swallowing therapy did not have a significant effect on the outcomes of death or dependency/disability, case fatality at the end of the trial, or penetration aspiration score. However, swallowing therapy may have reduced length of hospital stay, dysphagia, and chest infections, and may have improved swallowing ability. However, these results are based on evidence of variable quality, involving a variety of interventions. Further high-quality trials are needed to test whether specific interventions are effective. Application of Meridian Electrical Conductance in the Setting of Acute Ischemic Stroke: A Cross-Sectional Study.
In this study, a total of 102 subjects diagnosed with acute ischemic stroke within 7 days of onset were recruited, and the meridian energy analysis device (MEAD) was used to record the meridian electrical conductance (MEC) values of twelve meridians on unaffected and affected limbs. We found that the MEC value of the twelve meridians on the affected limbs was significantly higher than that on the unaffected limbs (P=0.001). Compared with the unaffected limbs, there was a higher value of MEC on the affected limbs of the lung meridian, heart meridian, pericardium meridian, and small intestine meridian, with significant dif...

Synergistic Effect of Combined Mirror Therapy on Upper Extremity in Patients With Stroke: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis
Conclusion: Despite the heterogeneity, the results indicate that combining mirror therapy with another rehabilitation therapy on the upper extremity in patients with stroke is better than single rehabilitation therapy. However, more randomized controlled clinical trials and larger sample sizes are required for an in-depth meta-analysis.

Observation for the effect of rTMS combined with magnetic stimulation at Neiguan (PC6) and Sanyinjiao (SP6) points on limb function after stroke: A study protocol
Conclusion: The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of repetitive magnetic stimulation of M1 region combined with magnetic stimulation of Neiguan and Sanyinjiao points on limb function after stroke. Through this study, we expect to explore a new scheme for the treatment of poststroke dyskinesia, and prove that compared with rTMS and acupuncture alone, the closed-loop rehabilitation theory based on “center peripheral center” can be more efficient and safe in the treatment of poststroke limb dysfunction. Trial Registration: The trial was registered in China clinical trial registry (http://www.chictr.or...

Treatment of sleep disturbance following stroke and traumatic brain injury: a systematic review of conservative interventions.
CONCLUSIONS: Some conservative interventions might be useful for improving sleep disturbance or disorders in these populations, but further research is required. IMPLICATIONS FOR REHABILITATION Sleep disturbance is common following stroke and traumatic brain injury, with insomnia and obstructive sleep apnoea being the most frequently diagnosed sleep disorders. Psychotherapy-based approaches might be useful for sleep disturbance after TBI and acupuncture may help improve insomnia or sleep disturbance following stroke or TBI, respectively. Morning bright light therapy appeared to be more beneficial for fatigue rather than sl...
