IJERPH, Vol. 20, Pages 1690: Acupuncture Is Effective at Reducing the Risk of Stroke in Patients with Migraines: A Real-World, Large-Scale Cohort Study with 19-Years of Follow-Up
This study explored the long-term effects of acupuncture treatment on stroke risk in migraineurs using national real-world data. We collected new migraine patients from the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database (NHIRD) from 1 January 2000 to 31 December 2017. Using 1:1 propensity-score matching, we assigned patients to either an acupuncture or non-acupuncture cohort and followed up until the end of 2018. The incidence of stroke in the two cohorts was compared using the Cox proportional hazards regression analysis. Each cohort was composed of 1354 newly diagnosed migraineurs with similar baseline characteristic...

Acupuncture for gait disturbance of patients with subacute and chronic stroke: a systematic review and meta-analysis protocol
Introduction Hemiparetic gait is one of the most common sequelae of a stroke. Acupuncture has shown potential in correcting hemiplegic gait patterns and improving motor function recovery after stroke. However, controversial findings and a lack of supportive evidence on the effectiveness of acupuncture for post-stroke hemiplegia. The intelligent gait analysis system provides a new perspective for the study of hemiparetic gait. This systematic review aims to collect relevant studies and critically evaluate the efficacy and safety of acupuncture in alleviating gait disturbance of post-stroke hemiplegia based on quantified gai...

Global trends and hotspots in research on acupuncture for stroke: a bibliometric and visualization analysis
This study aimed to characterize the global publications and analyze the trends of acupuncture for stroke in the past 40  years. We identified 1157 publications from the Web of Science Core Collection. The number of publications grew slowly in the first three decades from 1980 until it started to grow after 2010, with significant growth in 2011–2012 and 2019–2020. China, the USA, and South Korea are the top three countries in this field, and China has formed good internal cooperative relations. Early studies focused on the clinical efficacy of acupuncture for stroke. In the last five years, more emphasis has been plac...

Lateralisation of cerebral response to active acupuncture in patients with unilateral ischaemic stroke: an fMRI study.
CONCLUSIONS: Active acupuncture results in lateralisation of functional cerebral response to the contralateral unaffected hemisphere in patients with unilateral stroke. This lateralisation may represent an effect of acupuncture in enhancing a compensatory process by redistributing functions into the intact cortex, particularly in the unaffected hemisphere. Efficacy of integrated rehabilitation techniques of traditional chinese medicine for ischemic stroke: a randomized controlled trial.
This study aimed to determine the efficacy of Integrated Rehabilitation Techniques of Traditional Chinese Medicine (IRT-TCM) on patients with ischemic stroke as an alternative therapy to conventional rehabilitation techniques. Sixty-nine patients with ischemic stroke were randomly assigned to receive either IRT-TCM (intervention group, n = 46) or conventional rehabilitation techniques (control group, n = 23). The IRT-TCM consisted of a sequential combination of acupuncture and massage techniques. The Fugl-Meyer Assessment (FMA), National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS), Barthel index (BI) and modified Rankin Scal...

Community-applied research of a traditional Chinese medicine rehabilitation scheme on Broca's aphasia after stroke: study protocol for a randomized controlled trial
DiscussionIf the outcome is positive, this project will offer a low-cost appropriate technology for community health centers (CHCs) in the rehabilitation of aphasia patients after stroke, and could be implemented on a large scale, both in China and worldwide.Trial registration: Chinese Clinical Trial Registry: ChiCTR-TRC-13003703. Effectiveness of acupuncture combined with rehabilitation for treatment of acute or subacute stroke: a systematic review.
CONCLUSIONS: Acupuncture in combination with rehabilitation may have benefits for the treatment of acute and subacute stroke sequelae in comparison with rehabilitation alone. However, many of the studies were at risk of bias. Future studies should focus on reaching a consensus about the most appropriate modality of acupuncture intervention, and the appropriate length of treatment for both interventions, to maximise the potential synergistic outcomes. Clinical study of acupuncture treatment on motor aphasia after stroke.
CONCLUSIONS: Both the Heart-Gallbladder acupuncture and the conventional acupuncture are effective in the treatment of motor aphasia after stroke. Nevertheless, when compared to the conventional acupuncture, the Heart-Gallbladder acupuncture had better efficacy and it is safe as well. PMID: 27177100 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Effects of extended in-patient treatment training on outcome of post-stroke dysphagia.
CONCLUSIONS: The extended ward training could significantly improve the swallowing function of patients with post-stroke dysphagia, restore their swallowing function, and reduce adverse events of swallowing. The operations were simple, safe and practical. The training is worthy of promotion. PMID: 29272007 [PubMed - in process]

Adding electrical stimulation during standard rehabilitation after stroke to improve motor function. A systematic review and meta-analysis
ConclusionElectrical sensory input can contribute to routine rehabilitation to improve early post-stroke lower-extremity impairment and late motor function, with no change in spasticity. Prolonged periods of sensory stimulation such as TENS combined with activity can have beneficial effects on impairment and function after stroke.
