Acute ischaemic stroke or transient ischaemic attack and the need for inpatient echocardiography
Conclusions Echocardiography detected potential clinically relevant findings in a minority of patients (7.6%), but these findings changed medical management 90.5% of the time. A risk score using sex, ECG abnormality, and embolic pattern imaging at baseline could help predict which patients are more likely to have these echo findings.

Effects of aspirin on risk and severity of early recurrent stroke after transient ischaemic attack and ischaemic stroke: time-course analysis of randomised trials
Publication date: Available online 18 May 2016 Source:The Lancet Author(s): Peter M Rothwell, Ale Algra, Zhengming Chen, Hans-Christoph Diener, Bo Norrving, Ziyah Mehta Background Aspirin is recommended for secondary prevention after transient ischaemic attack (TIA) or ischaemic stroke on the basis of trials showing a 13% reduction in long-term risk of recurrent stroke. However, the risk of major stroke is very high for only the first few days after TIA and minor ischaemic stroke, and observational studies show substantially greater benefits of early medical treatment in the acute phase than do longer-term trials. ...

Remote ischaemic conditioning for preventing and treating ischaemic stroke.
CONCLUSIONS: We found low-quality evidence that RIC may reduce the risk of recurrent stroke in participants with intracerebral artery stenosis and reduce stroke severity in participants undergoing carotid stenting, but it may increase death or dependence in participants with acute ischaemic stroke who are undergoing intravenous thrombolysis. However, there is considerable uncertainty about these conclusions because of the small number of studies and low quality of the evidence. PMID: 29974450 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

The relationship between malignant tumors and ischemic stroke: II. Chronology of diagnoses and treatment of strokes
Orv Hetil. 2022 Jan 9;163(2):43-51. doi: 10.1556/650.2022.32329. Print 2022 Jan 9.ABSTRACTÖsszefoglaló. A malignus daganatok és a stroke együttesen gyakran fordulnak elő a stroke tradicionális rizikófaktoraival (magas vérnyomás, hyperlipidaemia, cukorbetegség, elhízás, dohányzás) rendelkező betegekben. Az elmúlt évtized kutatási eredményei alátámasztották, hogy a rosszindulatú daganatban szenvedő betegekben szignifikánsan nagyobb a stroke kockázata. A malignus daganatokhoz társuló stroke a leggyakrabban a malignus daganat diagnózisát követő fél-egy év során jelentkezik. A kapcsolat a más...

Effect of a provincial system of stroke care delivery on stroke care and outcomes.
Abstract BACKGROUND:Systems of stroke care delivery have been promoted as a means of improving the quality of stroke care, but little is known about their effectiveness. We assessed the effect of the Ontario Stroke System, a province-wide strategy of regionalized stroke care delivery, on stroke care and outcomes in Ontario, Canada. METHODS:We used population-based provincial administrative databases to identify all emergency department visits and hospital admissions for acute stroke and transient ischemic attack from Jan. 1, 2001, to Dec. 31, 2010. Using piecewise regression analyses, we assessed the effect of the...

A community-based study of stroke code users in northern portugal.
Conclusions: The criteria for accessing the Stroke Code are currently restrictive. Though the Stroke Code is accessed in case of more severe patient's conditions, the proportion of patients treated with fibrinolysis is relatively high in comparison with other studies. Development and evaluation of a nurse-led, tailored stroke self-management intervention
Conclusions: To our knowledge, this is the first UK study to explore the use of patient activation as a theoretical underpinning in stroke self-management research and to involve stroke survivors and stroke nurses in the design and development of a tailored, person-centred stroke self-management support intervention. The study findings provide the first step in understanding how to effectively develop and deliver stroke self-management support interventions to stroke survivors living at home in the first year following stroke. Further work is needed to develop and refine the intervention and identify how to effectively emb...

Prophylactic antibiotics after acute stroke for reducing pneumonia in patients with dysphagia (STROKE-INF): a prospective, cluster-randomised, open-label, masked endpoint, controlled clinical trial
This study assessed the effectiveness of antibiotic prophylaxis for reducing pneumonia in patients with dysphagia after acute stroke. Methods We did a prospective, multicentre, cluster-randomised, open-label controlled trial with masked endpoint assessment of patients older than 18 years with dysphagia after new stroke recruited from 48 stroke units in the UK, accredited and included in the UK National Stroke Audit. We excluded patients with contraindications to antibiotics, pre-existing dysphagia, or known infections, or who were not expected to survive beyond 14 days. We randomly assigned the units (1:1) by computer to ...

Age and gender differences in acute stroke hospital patients.
In conclusion, considerable differences were established between age and gender stroke patient groups, confirming the need of permanent national stroke registry and subsequent targeted action in secondary care, and prevention with education on risk factors, preferably personally tailored.
