Drug Overdose and Cardiovascular Deaths Among Deceased Organ Donors: Implications for Donor Utilization and Data Reporting
CONCLUSIONS Current COD definitions should be expanded to capture significant differences in the donor population. DI donors are the fastest growing cohort and the most likely utilized DBD donors, while trauma donors remain the most likely utilized DCD donors.PMID:37401050 | DOI:10.12659/AOT.940255

Unlucky numbers: Fighting murder convictions that rest on shoddy stats
LEIDEN, THE NETHERLANDS— When a Dutch nurse named Lucia de Berk stood trial for serial murder in 2003, statistician Richard Gill was aware of the case. But he saw no reason to stick his nose into it. De Berk was a pediatric nurse at Juliana Children’s Hospital in The Hague. In 2001, after a baby died while she was on duty, a colleague told superiors that De Berk had been present at a suspiciously high number of deaths and resuscitations. Hospital staff immediately informed the police. When investigators reexamined records from De Berk’s shifts, they found 10 suspicious incidents. Three other hospitals where D...

Outcomes and drivers of inappropriate dosing of non-vitamin K antagonist oral anticoagulants (NOACs) in patients with atrial fibrillation: a systematic review and meta-analysis
Conclusions Our analysis suggests that off-label underdosing of NOACs does not reduce bleeding outcomes. Patients prescribed off-label NOAC doses are at an increased risk of all-cause mortality. These data underscore the importance of prescriber adherence to NOAC dosing guidelines to achieve optimal clinical outcomes for patients with AF. PROSPERO registration number CRD42020219844.

Prevalence and risk of inappropriate dosing of direct oral anticoagulants in two Swiss atrial fibrillation registries
CONCLUSION: Inappropriate DOAC-dosing was more prevalent in multimorbid patients, but did not correlate with higher risks of adverse events after adjusting for confounders. DOAC prescription should follow label.PMID:36182083 | DOI:10.1016/j.vph.2022.107120

IJERPH, Vol. 19, Pages 10817: Spatiotemporal Correlation Analysis of Hydraulic Fracturing and Stroke in the United States
kins Xin Li Hydraulic fracturing or fracking has led to a rapid growth of oil and gas production in the United States, but the impact of fracking on public health is an important but underresearched topic. We designed a methodology to study spatiotemporal correlations between the risk of fracking and stroke mortality. An annualized loss expectancy (ALE) model is applied to quantify the risk of fracking. The geographically and temporally weighted regression (GTWR) model is used to analyze spatiotemporal correlations of stroke mortality, fracking ALE, and nine other socioeconomic- and health-related factors. The analys...
